What Do Coffee Enemas Do for You?

coffee enema kit During health consultations, many of my clients ask me, "What do coffee enemas do for you?"

Coffee enemas are well-known to help relieve pain, nausea, general nervous tension, and depression. Coffee enemas can also increase mental clarity, focus, and energy.

By lowering blood serum toxin levels, coffee enemas are thought to increase cell energy production and improve blood circulation, immunity, and tissue repair.

Coffee enemas support the body in part by increasing glutathione levels in the bloodstream. Glutathione reacts with free radicals (which cause cell damage) and makes them inert. These neutralized substances are then dissolved in the bile, released through the bile flow from the liver and gallbladder, and excreted through the intestinal tract.

As part of a detoxification program, coffee enemas facilitate the release of toxins in your body by:
  • stimulating the liver to produce more bile. Bile is a bodily fluid that has a role in fat digestion and into which many are dissolved for removal from the body through the gallbladder, small intestine, and colon.
  • causing the muscles of the bile duct to relax, opening the duct widely to produce a large flow of bile from the gallbladder into the small intestine. This allows the liver to rid itself of many toxins quickly, freeing it to process more blood-transported toxins from throughout the body.
  • dilating blood vessels via action of theophylline and theobromine in the coffee, further increasing blood flow to the liver.
  • increasing production of glutathione s-transferase (GST), a key detoxification enzyme, by 600% to 700%, via effects of palmitic acid in the coffee. GST shuttles toxins for binding with glutathione, which neutralizes them and carries them out of the body in the bile.
  • speeding transit of waste through the colon.

What type of coffee is best for coffee enemas?

coffee enema kit It's important that the coffee you use in coffee enemas is organic, low-acid, and high in caffeine and palmitates, which are the key therapeutic elements of coffee that our bodies use for effective detoxification. We offer a special made-for-enema coffee that meets these criteria.

Never use decaffeinated coffee for your coffee enema.

The preparation of the coffee you use for the enema is also important. Air-roasted coffee is ideal for coffee enemas. Air roasting does not add smoke or flame to the beans, so there are no carcinogens introduced.

For those with gluten sensitivity, air roasting prevents cross-reactivity with gluten in the body.

Finally, it is important to use brewed coffee promptly. Do not store it once brewed, as it becomes more acidic.

How often should I do coffee enemas?

The answer to this question varies depending on your state of health, the amount of free time you have, and the results you're seeing with coffee enemas.

It's also important to individualize your enema program to meet the specific needs of your own microbiome.

For some people, especially those experiencing more extreme health issues or high levels of environmental toxicity, daily coffee enemas may be ideal.

For others, doing coffee enemas or the enema series anywhere from 1 to 4 times per week may be appropriate.

Listening to your body is key when determining how frequently you should do a coffee enema.

What are the potential side effects of a coffee enema?

Consult your doctor before beginning a coffee enema program. When taken correctly, coffee enemas are very safe. However, some minor side effects can occur, and enemas may not be the best choice for everyone. Minor side effects may include:
  • Dehydration. Be sure to stay well-hydrated before, during, and after a coffee enema.
  • Feeling too "buzzed". Don't use too much coffee in your enema, or make the solution too strong. You do not need a very strong solution to enjoy the benefits of a coffee enema. (One tablespoon of coffee to one gallon of water can be enough.) If you’re sensitive to caffeine, start with small amounts, and pay attention to how your body responds.
Although in the medical literature you may see more serious risks mentioned in association with coffee enemas (such as rectal tears or infection), I can state confidently, having worked with thousands of clients over the past 20+ years, that when done with the quality enema equipment and following proper instructions, coffee enemas are a safe and effective health tool for most people!

Do coffee enemas deplete minerals?

While coffee enemas are very effective at detoxification, they can also deplete essential minerals in your body. To counteract this, I have created a 3-step enema series protocol which does not deplete the body of electrolytes, increases the amount of healthy microorganisms in the colon, helps improve overall immunity, supports the liver, and does not irritate sensitive colonic tissues. (The coffee enema is the third and final enema in the series.)

Coffee enemas vs. the enema series

A full enema series reduces imbalances and inflammation in the gut microbiome and supports the key bodily detoxification processes that occur during the coffee enema.

Furthermore, because the primary action of the coffee enema is to allow the coffee solution to be absorbed into the portal vein, you don't want to reabsorb any toxic byproducts of the waste sitting in the lower colon. Therefore, it’s important to first cleanse that waste with the first two enemas in the series.

For these reasons, an enema series is much more effective than taking just a single coffee enema.

How can I further enhance my coffee enemas?

Chlorophyll Capsules

It is important to take some sort of binding agent when doing coffee enemas. Chlorophyll tightly binds the toxins that are released in the bile during a coffee enema, so that they will not be reabsorbed through the intestinal wall.

Take 4-8 chlorophyll capsules approximately 30 minutes before the start of the enema. Then, just before starting the enema, take another 4-8 capsules.

Tangerine Essential Oil

Tangerine essential oil increases the efficacy of coffee enemas in several ways. It enhances the absorption of the coffee through the colon and into the circulatory system. It assists the liver to process the coffee more efficiently and will balance the strong purgative effects of the coffee with its regenerative healing properties. It also helps the body to produce glutathione, which aids in detoxification of the liver.

Add 3-10 drops of Tangerine Essential Oil to your coffee enema solution.

Geranium Essential Oil

In 2012 researchers at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey found that geranium essential oil also enhances glutathione levels in the bloodstream.

This is important for a number of reasons:
  • Many people are sensitive to caffeine. Caffeine is what increases your glutathione levels when you take a coffee enema. Thus, geranium can be used instead of coffee in a therapeutic enema.
  • If you aren't sensitive to caffeine, you can add geranium to your coffee enema for even greater benefit.
  • If you don't have enough time to take coffee enemas, consider using geranium essential oil suppositories.
coffee enema kit To substitute geranium essential oil for coffee in your enema, mix one teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt and 4-6 drops of Geranium Essential Oil or 5-20 drops of our Coffee Enema Essential Oil Blend per quart of filtered water. Like a coffee enema, this is best done after first completing the first two enemas in the enema series.

Coffee Enemas and the MTHFR Gene Mutation

One significant factor that impacts many people's ability to naturally eliminate toxins from their bodies is a mutation in the MTHFR gene.

This variant is fairly common, with research finding that 20-40% of Americans may have either one variant (heterozygous, which is unlikely to lead to any health issues) or two (homozygous).

MTHFR gene mutations are inherited from your parents.

Homozygous mutations can create issues with your body’s ability to detoxify and methylate. Thus people with the homozygous MTHFR mutation may need to take additional measures to to help rid their bodies of toxins, and coffee enemas can be one important tool to do so.

You can get tested for the MTHFR gene through saliva testing such as www.23andme.com.

Summary

A coffee enema, particularly when taken as part of an enema series, can be a powerful tool to help you detoxify your body.

The potential benefits of coffee enemas include enhancing your body's cellular and tissue health, strengthening your immune system, increasing your energy levels, relieving pain and nausea, and more.

Using the enema series, a chlorophyll binder, and targeted essential oils with your coffee enemas can make them even more effective and lessen any potential side effects.
