How to Prepare for a Detox

by Stephanie Carnes
OHN Contributor

Embarking on a healthy detoxification plan this spring may be just what you need! Take the time now to prepare and educate yourself about healthy practices so that you can avoid the pitfalls of fad diets and fasting. The information below outlines what is needed to support your body and aid its natural healing processes while on a detox diet.

What You'll Need:

1. VIT-RA-TOX KIT - Purchase this kit HERE.

2. QUALITY WATER - Learn More

3. NUTRITIOUS LIQUIDS - The importance of drinking only liquids on a detox plan is to give your digestive system a time to rest and focus on doing the important job of eliminating toxins and healing. You will need to drink 1/2 to 1 gallon of nutritious liquids each day, and having a couple of thermoses on hand allows you to travel with your liquids.
  • Raw Milk
  • Living Fuel
  • Fresh, organic vegetable juice
  • Home-made bone broth or packaged soup
  • Beet Kvass
  • Kefir
  • Kombucha
4. COCONUT OIL - Coconut oil will keep you warm, cleanse your liver, and help your body remove toxins. It will also help you feel full and reset your metabolism while you fast. Take 2 to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil each day. Sally Fallon and her co-author Mary Enig have written extensively about the health benefits of coconut oil in their book, Eat Fat, Lose Fat.

Additional Details:

RAW MILK - If you’re having trouble locating raw milk, contact your nearest Weston A. Price chapter.

VERY VEGGIE - Very Veggie is a delicious, tomato-based, organic vegetable juice. Locate a supplier nearest you.

BONE BROTH - The chicken or turkey bones in the stock recipe can be replaced with any other meat bones such as lamb, beef, buffalo, fish or venison. For additional stock recipes, refer to Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions cookbook.

ORGANIC GOURMET BROTH - Imagine Foods and Pacific Foods make delicious, organic gourmet broth. These broths are made from organically raised free-range chickens, organic beef and organic vegetables. If you cannot make your own broth, look for single serving and family-sized packages from these companies

TEAS - Hot chamomile tea with raw cream is a treat at bedtime. Peppermint tea in the mid-afternoon also brings a sense of digestive health during a fast. My other favorite teas include Echinacea, Nettle Leaf, Pau D’Arco and Oat Straw. I recommend one-to-four cups of herbal tea daily.

The Importance of Supplements:

It is essential during your fast that you take supplements. Without them, you will not remove as many of the toxins that are being released as you need to do for a successful cleanse. The Optimal Health Center recommends V.E. Irons’ Vit-Ra-Tox kit. The fiber in the Vit-Ra-Tox kit will give the toxins, bacterial waste and debris, which are leaving your body, something to adhere to while passing through your colon. The clay carries a negative electric charge and can attract positively charged pathogenic organisms along with their toxins and carry them out of the body. Clay compounds also provide minerals. As such, bentonite clay facilitates assimilation of the nutrients you are taking in from raw milk and vegetable juices and can help the intestines to rid the body of toxins that are being released from cells.

The other supplements in the Vit-Ra-Tox kit are Greenlife, a combination of grasses, vitamin C, and Wheat Germ/Flax oil. These will bring into your body the extra nutrients needed to keep your immune system fully functional while you do the hard work of fasting.

Quit Smoking For Good: How Detoxification Can Help

by Stephanie Carnes
OHN Contributor

Smoke from a cigarette exposes your body to over 600 dangerous chemicals, including heavy metals such as cadmium, formaldehyde, phenol, acetaldehyde and arsenic. Though the health hazards of smoking are common knowledge, it can often be a difficult road for many to overcome.

Detoxification is a key tool that is missing in many attempts to quit smoking. Just giving it up can seem like a hopeless goal without assisting your body in removing the stored toxins that have accumulated. The great news is that within two weeks on the Optimal Health Center's detox plan, most of the nicotine will be gone from your body. Yes, it only takes two weeks for the majority of nicotine to leave! By the end of this program, you can easily be a nonsmoker.

Bile, from the gallbladder, is your main tool for carrying the nicotine and other toxins out of your body in these two weeks. Colon cleansing, and particularly coffee enemas, increase the flow of bile out of your body. Thus, if you are quitting smoking, take coffee enemas, after your cleansing enemas, one to seven times per week. Once the nicotine is out of the body, all physical withdrawal will cease.

During the initial two weeks and after, it is important to realize that stress has a physiological effect on the body, which increases the desire for cigarettes. Stress makes the urine acidic. Whenever the urine becomes acidic, the body excretes more nicotine. Thus, when smokers encounter a stressful situation, they excrete more nicotine and go into withdrawal.

Most smokers feel that when they are nervous or upset, cigarettes help calm them down. The calming effect from cigarettes is not relief from the emotional strain of a situation, but actually the effect of replenishing the nicotine supply and ending the withdrawal. During stressful times, take more coffee enemas. During stressful times, find a friend who can listen to you rant and rave about the stressful situation. During stressful times, play a musical instrument. During stressful times, take a long walk in a favorite spot and cry.

It is essential to try and diminish the amount of stress that you are under when you take on the task of quitting smoking. It is fine to start a plan of detoxification and then start eliminating cigarettes a week or two into it. Always remember that your goal is to be successful.

With small and steadfast steps, you will be successful! Contact us for support on your journey toward optimal health.
