Leaky gut syndrome, also known as increased intestinal permeability or intestinal hyperpermeability, is a phenomenon that occurs when microscopic pores (called tight junctions) in the wall of the small intestine widen enough to allow harmful substances such as microorganisms, toxins, and foreign antigens to enter the bloodstream. Because such items are not meant to leave the digestive tract and enter the blood, they may cause a significant immune and inflammatory response, which can lead to debilitating allergies and other health complications.
