What Is a Coffee Enema?

enema coffee
A coffee enema is a therapeutic enema that contains made-for-enema coffee, filtered water, and sometimes a few drops of an essential oil. Coffee enemas are a well-known tool to help detoxify your body, specifically the liver and gallbladder, and raise your body's glutathione levels.

Glutathione is an antioxidant that is key to your body's detoxification abilities. It relieves oxidative stress by reacting to free radicals and making them inert. High levels of oxidative stress can lead to serious health concerns, such as diabetes and cancer, so it's important to keep your glutathione levels up and oxidative stress down.

Coffee enemas stimulate the liver to produce more bile, and cause the muscles of the bile duct to release bile from the gallbladder into the small intestine. This allows the liver to quickly rid itself of harmful toxins, so it can continue to function well and support your overall health.

Coffee enemas are also known to help relieve pain and nausea, reduce inflammation, and increase mental clarity, focus, and energy levels.

How can I make a coffee enema more effective?

While coffee enemas alone are a great health tool, there are multiple ways you can make your coffee enema protocol even more effective:
  • Firstly, we recommend doing two therapeutic cleansing enemas beforehand, one with our Frankincense and Myrrh Goat Milk Soap, and the other with our Colon Cleanse Essential Oil Blend and Celtic Sea Salt. These enemas help clear the colon out so you're not potentially absorbing harmful toxins during the coffee enema. These two cleansing provide their own therapeutic benefits, including helping to balance your microbiome.

With the third enema being the coffee enema, this constitutes our 3-step enema series protocol.
  • coffee EO blend
  • Secondly, you can add essential oil drops to a coffee enema to help increase the body's glutathione levels beyond what the coffee enema alone can do, and therefore increase the efficacy of your coffee enema. We recommend adding 5-10 drops of Tangerine Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil, or our OHN Coffee Enema Essential Oil Blend into your coffee enema solution. Tangerine essential oil also helps remove heavy metals from your body.

These essential oils can also be used to replace the coffee in an enema for people who are sensitive or allergic to coffee or caffeine.
  • Finally, it is best to use a binding agent when doing a coffee enema. We recommend consuming chlorophyll, which tightly binds the toxins released by the gallbladder so they leave the body and are not reabsorbed through the intestinal wall. Take 4-8 chlorophyll capsules approximately 30 minutes before you start the coffee enema.

Coffee enema tips:

  • Make your coffee and water enema solution roughly body temperature (approx. 98°F) for the enema if possible.
  • It's best to hold a coffee enema for about 12-15 minutes. If you're not able to hold an enema for that long, that's ok. Just hold it for as long as you're able to!
  • Frequency — Some people do coffee enemas daily, some people do them a few times a week or month. The optimal frequency depends on your state of health and amount of free time, so it's best to listen to your body, and how the enemas are making you feel, when deciding how frequently to do coffee enemas.
  • Location — We recommend doing enemas somewhere you can be comfortable that is also close to a toilet. Many people do enemas either lying in a bathtub or lying on a towel on the bathroom floor.
  • Always use coffee that is made for enemas — organic, high in caffeine and palmitates, low-acid, and lightly air-roasted for a coffee enema. We recommend OHN's made-for-enema coffee.

What Do Coffee Enemas Do for You?

coffee enema kit During health consultations, many of my clients ask me, "What do coffee enemas do for you?"

Coffee enemas are well-known to help relieve pain, nausea, general nervous tension, and depression. Coffee enemas can also increase mental clarity, focus, and energy.

By lowering blood serum toxin levels, coffee enemas are thought to increase cell energy production and improve blood circulation, immunity, and tissue repair.

Coffee enemas support the body in part by increasing glutathione levels in the bloodstream. Glutathione reacts with free radicals (which cause cell damage) and makes them inert. These neutralized substances are then dissolved in the bile, released through the bile flow from the liver and gallbladder, and excreted through the intestinal tract.

As part of a detoxification program, coffee enemas facilitate the release of toxins in your body by:
  • stimulating the liver to produce more bile. Bile is a bodily fluid that has a role in fat digestion and into which many are dissolved for removal from the body through the gallbladder, small intestine, and colon.
  • causing the muscles of the bile duct to relax, opening the duct widely to produce a large flow of bile from the gallbladder into the small intestine. This allows the liver to rid itself of many toxins quickly, freeing it to process more blood-transported toxins from throughout the body.
  • dilating blood vessels via action of theophylline and theobromine in the coffee, further increasing blood flow to the liver.
  • increasing production of glutathione s-transferase (GST), a key detoxification enzyme, by 600% to 700%, via effects of palmitic acid in the coffee. GST shuttles toxins for binding with glutathione, which neutralizes them and carries them out of the body in the bile.
  • speeding transit of waste through the colon.

What type of coffee is best for coffee enemas?

coffee enema kit It's important that the coffee you use in coffee enemas is organic, low-acid, and high in caffeine and palmitates, which are the key therapeutic elements of coffee that our bodies use for effective detoxification. We offer a special made-for-enema coffee that meets these criteria.

Never use decaffeinated coffee for your coffee enema.

The preparation of the coffee you use for the enema is also important. Air-roasted coffee is ideal for coffee enemas. Air roasting does not add smoke or flame to the beans, so there are no carcinogens introduced.

For those with gluten sensitivity, air roasting prevents cross-reactivity with gluten in the body.

Finally, it is important to use brewed coffee promptly. Do not store it once brewed, as it becomes more acidic.

How often should I do coffee enemas?

The answer to this question varies depending on your state of health, the amount of free time you have, and the results you're seeing with coffee enemas.

It's also important to individualize your enema program to meet the specific needs of your own microbiome.

For some people, especially those experiencing more extreme health issues or high levels of environmental toxicity, daily coffee enemas may be ideal.

For others, doing coffee enemas or the enema series anywhere from 1 to 4 times per week may be appropriate.

Listening to your body is key when determining how frequently you should do a coffee enema.

What are the potential side effects of a coffee enema?

Consult your doctor before beginning a coffee enema program. When taken correctly, coffee enemas are very safe. However, some minor side effects can occur, and enemas may not be the best choice for everyone. Minor side effects may include:
  • Dehydration. Be sure to stay well-hydrated before, during, and after a coffee enema.
  • Feeling too "buzzed". Don't use too much coffee in your enema, or make the solution too strong. You do not need a very strong solution to enjoy the benefits of a coffee enema. (One tablespoon of coffee to one gallon of water can be enough.) If you’re sensitive to caffeine, start with small amounts, and pay attention to how your body responds.
Although in the medical literature you may see more serious risks mentioned in association with coffee enemas (such as rectal tears or infection), I can state confidently, having worked with thousands of clients over the past 20+ years, that when done with the quality enema equipment and following proper instructions, coffee enemas are a safe and effective health tool for most people!

Do coffee enemas deplete minerals?

While coffee enemas are very effective at detoxification, they can also deplete essential minerals in your body. To counteract this, I have created a 3-step enema series protocol which does not deplete the body of electrolytes, increases the amount of healthy microorganisms in the colon, helps improve overall immunity, supports the liver, and does not irritate sensitive colonic tissues. (The coffee enema is the third and final enema in the series.)

Coffee enemas vs. the enema series

A full enema series reduces imbalances and inflammation in the gut microbiome and supports the key bodily detoxification processes that occur during the coffee enema.

Furthermore, because the primary action of the coffee enema is to allow the coffee solution to be absorbed into the portal vein, you don't want to reabsorb any toxic byproducts of the waste sitting in the lower colon. Therefore, it’s important to first cleanse that waste with the first two enemas in the series.

For these reasons, an enema series is much more effective than taking just a single coffee enema.

How can I further enhance my coffee enemas?

Chlorophyll Capsules

It is important to take some sort of binding agent when doing coffee enemas. Chlorophyll tightly binds the toxins that are released in the bile during a coffee enema, so that they will not be reabsorbed through the intestinal wall.

Take 4-8 chlorophyll capsules approximately 30 minutes before the start of the enema. Then, just before starting the enema, take another 4-8 capsules.

Tangerine Essential Oil

Tangerine essential oil increases the efficacy of coffee enemas in several ways. It enhances the absorption of the coffee through the colon and into the circulatory system. It assists the liver to process the coffee more efficiently and will balance the strong purgative effects of the coffee with its regenerative healing properties. It also helps the body to produce glutathione, which aids in detoxification of the liver.

Add 3-10 drops of Tangerine Essential Oil to your coffee enema solution.

Geranium Essential Oil

In 2012 researchers at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey found that geranium essential oil also enhances glutathione levels in the bloodstream.

This is important for a number of reasons:
  • Many people are sensitive to caffeine. Caffeine is what increases your glutathione levels when you take a coffee enema. Thus, geranium can be used instead of coffee in a therapeutic enema.
  • If you aren't sensitive to caffeine, you can add geranium to your coffee enema for even greater benefit.
  • If you don't have enough time to take coffee enemas, consider using geranium essential oil suppositories.
coffee enema kit To substitute geranium essential oil for coffee in your enema, mix one teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt and 4-6 drops of Geranium Essential Oil or 5-20 drops of our Coffee Enema Essential Oil Blend per quart of filtered water. Like a coffee enema, this is best done after first completing the first two enemas in the enema series.

Coffee Enemas and the MTHFR Gene Mutation

One significant factor that impacts many people's ability to naturally eliminate toxins from their bodies is a mutation in the MTHFR gene.

This variant is fairly common, with research finding that 20-40% of Americans may have either one variant (heterozygous, which is unlikely to lead to any health issues) or two (homozygous).

MTHFR gene mutations are inherited from your parents.

Homozygous mutations can create issues with your body’s ability to detoxify and methylate. Thus people with the homozygous MTHFR mutation may need to take additional measures to to help rid their bodies of toxins, and coffee enemas can be one important tool to do so.

You can get tested for the MTHFR gene through saliva testing such as www.23andme.com.

Summary

A coffee enema, particularly when taken as part of an enema series, can be a powerful tool to help you detoxify your body.

The potential benefits of coffee enemas include enhancing your body's cellular and tissue health, strengthening your immune system, increasing your energy levels, relieving pain and nausea, and more.

Using the enema series, a chlorophyll binder, and targeted essential oils with your coffee enemas can make them even more effective and lessen any potential side effects.

The Dilemma of Constipation While Pregnant (Client Letter)

I can't recall the number of times that I have googled "are enemas safe during pregnancy?". I have never found a meaningful answer to my question. I found lots of commentary and concerns that enemas can trigger uterine contractions, and therefore are risky during pregnancy.

In my first pregnancy I suffered terribly from constipation. I resorted to frequent use of glycerine suppositories to get my bowel to eliminate. Not a good solution!

When I was pregnant with my second child I again experienced constipation. This time the constipation triggered uterine contractions, once at 25 weeks and again around 30 weeks. I was hospitalized each time as a result of the contractions caused by the constipation. Based on these experiences I do agree that bowel spasms can trigger uterine spasms. My "treatment" was a Panadine Forte -- which unfortunately made me even more constipated. Following the hospital stays I decided to try an at-home enema to prevent the build-up and constipation as well as preventing any further uterine contractions. This approach worked for me.

I read Kristina's book, Ten Days to Optimal Health, and watched some how-to videos to find out how to do an enema. I was extremely cautious and slow with my enema experimentation. I used comfortably warm water and only allowed a small amount of fluid into my bowel at slow intervals so that my bowel could adjust and be completely comfortable with the enema. I did the enemas while soaking in an Epsom salt bath and I quickly felt very relaxed doing enemas. The enemas gave me immense relief and helped me to avoid constipation. I did not have any further uterine contractions and my baby was born at full term, with a wonderful natural birth.

How can I have a pregnancy without constipation?

My question is now, how can I have another child without suffering from the problems caused by poor elimination and inadequate detoxification?

A bit more about my background: I have suffered from constipation for years and years. I adopted a whole foods diet, following the principles of Weston A. Price about 4 years ago. The diet change rapidly improved my immunity and the recurring thrush, viral, throat infections and urinary tract infections that I had suffered from for years disappeared. Unfortunately the diet change did not solve my constipation issues.

With much experimentation I found that I can live free from constipation by eating liberal amounts of saturated fats (fermented cod liver oil, coconut oil, duck and chicken egg yolks, avocado and other fats), including 2 to 3 cups of gelatinous bone broth each day, strictly limiting the amount of cooked protein I eat to around 120 grams per day, eating fresh salads with herbs, avoiding all grains, starches, nuts and seeds, including a liquid magnesium supplement, soaking in Epsom salt and clay baths and getting plenty of exercise.

I no longer need to use enemas to help relieve constipation; the formula above works to get my body eliminating.

We are hoping to have another baby. Recently as part of our preconception care my doctor tested me for MTHFR. I tested positive with two defective genes (I am MTHFR C667T homozygous), which means my body does not metholate effectively. In very simple terms my body is only 10 to 20% effective at detoxifying, instead of 100% effective. Many people suffer symptoms from MTHFR gene mutations without knowing they have a problem. You can be tested for MTHFR through blood tests or through saliva tests (e.g., www.23andme.com).

I have been prescribed supplements to help my body to improve methylation, and in addition to the supplements I have started following the recommendations from an MTHFR expert, Dr. Lynch of www.mthfr.net.

One of the tools Dr. Lynch recommends for detoxification and to help MTHFR sufferers is coffee enemas. I started using enemas again last year to do coffee enemas. I am amazed at the physical difference and calmness I have experienced from regular coffee enemas. They also allow me to make lifestyle and diet changes without suffering from detox symptoms. I have started experimenting with adding geranium to my coffee enemas as it increases glutathione levels. So far I love it. It smells beautiful and makes me feel good.

So, what is the answer to the pregnancy constipation dilemma? There is no definitive answer, and one person's medicine is another person's poison. No one can make guarantees about what will cause a pregnancy to go smoothly. There may be risks of uterine contractions triggered by bowel spasms. My experience and personal choice would be to use enemas if I need them in a future pregnancy. I feel that the risks of doing an enema at home, in a relaxed state, slowly and peacefully, are very, very low. That said, I would also choose to eat raw egg yolks and raw meat during a pregnancy, which I also consider very low risk (as long as they are sourced from reliable farmers). For some women my "low risk" choices would be seen as very high risk. I think that the dilemma of constipation during pregnancy is a matter of considering your risk appetite, choosing what you are prepared to experiment with and being calm and peaceful in your actions.

A final word about raising babies and children on organic whole foods diets

It is amazingly hard work to source fresh organic whole foods, cook almost everything from scratch, make bone broth, ferment sauerkraut, and cover the enormous cost of eating this way (compared to cheap, processed grain-based foods). It is also very hard work convincing young children that eating bread and cake is bad for their health and will damage their facial and physical development as well as compromise their immunity... and that taking fermented cod liver oil, drinking stock and eating caviar is a good idea! My experience is that it is worth it. It is early days for me as my children are still young, and I certainly do not have all of the answers. So far I feel that the results are worth the effort. My youngest has never been sick, he has beautiful big eyes, big white teeth, a gorgeous smile and a very sharp mind. My eldest has never been sick, but has had some dental decay (which is a form of illness and compromised immunity). My kids exist in the world, have contact with school kids and exposure to others. Their immunity seems strong. I don't believe they would be as they are if they were raised on a diet which included processed foods, processed sugar and processed grains. I am grateful for what I have learned, for the wisdom shared by Weston A. Price, Kristina Amelong, and other authors, and I pray each day that my children, my husband and I continue to be blessed with health.

Coffee Enemas: The Importance of Glutathione

Coffee enemas are well known to relieve pain, nausea, general nervous tension, and depression. Coffee enemas, by lowering blood serum toxin levels, are also thought to increase cell energy production, enhance tissue health, and improve blood circulation, immunity, tissue repair, and cellular regeneration. Again, it is thought that coffee enemas support the body in these ways, in part by increasing glutathione levels in the blood stream.

Glutathione reacts with free radicals (which cause cell damage) in the bloodstream and makes them inert. These neutralized substances are then dissolved in the bile, released through the bile flow from the liver and gallbladder, and excreted through the intestinal tract.

In 2012, researchers Sabuncuoğlu S and Söhretoğlu D, from the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Hacettepe University, in Ankara, Turkey, found that geranium also enhances glutathione levels in the blood stream.

This is fantastic news for a number of reasons:
  1. Many people are sensitive to caffeine. Caffeine is what increases the glutathione levels with the coffee enemas. Thus, geranium can be used instead of the coffee enema.

  2. For those who aren't sensitive to caffeine in the coffee enema, you can add geranium to your coffee enema for a greater benefit.

  3. Science, through geranium, is affirming that the healing concepts behind the coffee enema – raising glutathione levels – are effective for improving health. I propose that this blog post begin a conversation with the TV show "My Strange Addiction" and its Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa regarding negative statements made about the coffee enema. Coffee enemas are an effective healing tool. I have worked with thousands of people who have relied on the coffee enema for healing. Many of them have reported that the coffee enema has saved their life. Let's seriously look into the science behind raising glutathione levels.

  4. People who don't have enough time to take coffee enemas can use geranium suppositories.

To use geranium essential oil in place of a coffee enema, first prepare the colon with the first two enemas in the series. Then, in 1-2 quarts of filtered water, mix one teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt and 4-6 drops of Geranium Essential Oil or 5-20 drops of our Coffee Enema Essential Oil Blend per quart of water.

Please pass this blog post along to your friends. The negative press around the coffee enema means that we need to spread the word of their effectiveness one person at a time. You could save a life.
