Heal Fissures with Enemas: Why the Right Enema Kit Can Be Life-Changing

goat milk enema soap
If you're searching for a natural, effective solution to heal painful anal fissures, you're not alone — and you're in the right place.

At Optimal Health Network, we've worked with hundreds of clients who have found real relief by integrating enemas into a comprehensive healing protocol. A high-quality anal fissure enema kit can be one of the most empowering tools on your journey to wellness.

A Client's Breakthrough with Enemas for Fissures

One client, Sarah, shared with us: "I had struggled for over a year with recurring fissures, trying creams, sitz baths, and even changing my diet with little relief. I finally gave enemas a try after reading your articles — and wow. The Basic Anal Fissure Healing Enema Kit gave me what I didn't know I needed: a gentle, therapeutic way to relieve my bowels without tearing. Within weeks, I felt like I had my life back."

Sarah's story is not unique. If you're suffering from chronic fissures, the right enema healing program can reduce irritation, support tissue repair, and promote regular, pain-free bowel movements — something most creams and medications simply can't accomplish on their own.

Why an Enema Kit Works for Fissures

When you treat fissures with enemas, you're not just cleaning the colon. You're allowing your body to heal by reducing strain during bowel movements, lowering inflammation, and supporting a healthier microbiome. Our anal fissure enema kits are designed with this delicate healing in mind.

We offer two specific kits depending on your needs:
  1. Basic Anal Fissure Healing Enema Kit — This is a simple, effective setup ideal for first-time users.
  2. Deluxe Anal Fissure Healing Enema Kit — This includes everything in the basic kit, plus key therapeutic additions to enhance healing, including our custom soap and essential oil blends.
Clients use these kits with our enema series protocol, a three-step process that supports detoxification and colon health at every level.

The Therapeutic Benefits of Butyrate in Your Home Enema Program

goat milk enema soap Incorporating butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, into your enema routine can significantly enhance gut health, providing benefits beyond its well-known anti-inflammatory effects.

Research shows that butyrate supports the intestinal lining's integrity and regulates immune responses, helping to prevent harmful bacteria from adhering to the gut wall. This makes butyrate infusions particularly beneficial for individuals managing gut-related issues such as IBS or leaky gut syndrome.

Optimal Health Network's specially formulated made-for-enema goat milk soap, rich in butyrate, provides these benefits when used in a gentle, targeted solution. The properties of our Frankincense and Myrrh and Chamomile and Sage soaps allow for direct delivery to the colon during an enema, which can reduce inflammation and promote tissue healing. This is especially helpful for those with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

By incorporating our butyrate-enriched goat milk enema soap into your health routine, you're nourishing your colon with an ingredient that not only helps you heal but also supports long-term digestive health. Regular use of this soap encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria, promoting a balanced microbiome. A healthy gut microbiome contributes to overall well-being, impacting everything from energy levels to immune function. You're fostering a healthier internal environment, leading to improved digestion and enhanced vitality.

Intermittent Fasting (What Is the Best Time of Day to Fast?)

Different types of fasting, including intermittent fasting, conducted due to lifestyle, religious practices, or availability of food, have been common in many parts of the world throughout human history.

Intermittent fasting (IF) has grown in popularity as a health trend for those wanting to lose weight, improve metabolic health, improve blood pressure, reduce risk of diabetes, or improve overall health.

According to Johns Hopkins neuroscientist Mark Mattson, Ph.D., "Many things happen during intermittent fasting that can protect organs against chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, age-related neurodegenerative disorders, even inflammatory bowel disease and many cancers."

Intermittent fasting is a pattern of eating that includes both periods of fasting and periods of normal eating. IF specifies when you should eat, unlike traditional diets, which specify mostly what you should eat.

However, what you eat is still very important while intermittent fasting. I recommend following the dietary guidelines laid out in my Ten Days to Optimal Health program in conjunction with your intermittent fasting program.

Ten Days to Optimal Health My health program includes a 5-day fasting program, done alongside colon cleansing and using the Vit-Ra-Tox Kit. I recommend doing this program 3-6 times per year to detoxify the body.

Intermittent fasting is not recommended for everyone, including those with a history of eating disorders, those under the age of 18, pregnant or breastfeeding women, those with diabetes or blood sugar problems, or those with other underlying health conditions. Please consult with your doctor if you are unsure whether intermittent fasting is right for you.

Mercury Toxicity and
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

Sources of Mercury Exposure

Mercury is a highly toxic chemical element that can be found in thermometers, electrical equipment, fluorescent light bulbs, dental fillings, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, seafood, and industrial waste.

Despite its toxicity, mercury is still used in dental amalgams (the silver-colored material used to fill teeth after removal of a cavity) in most of the world.

As a byproduct of industrialization, mercury can find its way into soil and water sources, and from there into the food we eat. Consuming foods that contain mercury is the most common cause of mercury poisoning, particularly for those who eat a lot of fish or other seafood, due to the mercury exposure and build-up that occurs in fish and other sea creatures living in polluted waters.

Other sources of possible mercury poisoning can include broken oral or rectal thermometers and exposure to toxic air or water if you live or work in highly industrialized areas.

Very small amounts of mercury are not necessarily harmful to your health, but significant mercury exposure can be very dangerous, even life-threatening, and in general we should all be trying to limit our exposure to mercury as much as possible.

Symptoms of Mercury Poisoning

Symptoms associated with mercury poisoning are primarily neurological and include:
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • irritability
  • memory problems
  • tremors
  • numbness, especially in hands and feet
  • speech difficulty
  • muscle weakness and lack of coordination
  • changes in vision and hearing
  • trouble walking
  • insomnia
hair tissue mineral analysis

How To Diagnose Mercury Poisoning

You can test your mercury levels using either a blood test or a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA).

Blood tests may give you the information you need about your body's mercury and other heavy metal levels, but it's also possible for blood tests to give you completely normal (but inaccurate) results even if you have elevated mercury levels. This is because the body is constantly removing heavy metals from the blood as a protective measure, and depositing them into tissues such as your bones, teeth, and hair.

For most heavy metals, including mercury, blood tests are primarily accurate for acute exposure to heavy metals (taking the test within 3-5 days of significant exposure should show elevated heavy metal levels), but are less accurate for testing longer-term heavy metal toxicity, because mercury (or copper, lead, etc.) levels decrease rapidly from the blood after initial exposure. Therefore, I recommend using a hair tissue mineral analysis to most accurately determine your body's heavy metal levels, and whether or not you have mercury toxicity.

Treatment for Mercury Poisoning

The first and most important way to treat mercury toxicity is to stop all possible sources of exposure. This may include removing seafood from your diet, replacing any fillings you have that contain mercury, and removing any other environmental sources of mercury you may be exposed to.

Additionally, doctors often recommend chelation therapy for severe cases of mercury poisoning to help the body remove and dispose of mercury. This type of therapy does have side effects and risks, so it's best to use only when necessary. If you think you have severe mercury poisoning, see a doctor right away.

I also recommend regularly doing my 3-step enema series protocol — which consists of two therapeutic cleansing enemas followed by a coffee enema — to help detox your body from many toxins and heavy metals, including mercury.

▶︎ Learn More about the Enema Series

There are also several supplements I recommend taking to help heal from mercury toxicity (or heavy metal toxicity in general): hair tissue mineral analysis
  • OHN Heavy Metals Detox Kit (pictured) — This kit contains four key supplements, including Ortho Z-Binder and Endo-Met GB-3, to help you detox from toxic heavy metals including copper, mercury, aluminum, and lead.
  • Ortho Z-Binder — This is a broad-spectrum, naturally sourced binding formula which supports enhanced clearance of heavy metals from the GI tract. Binders have been used for centuries to treat toxin exposure and play an important role in many detoxification protocols.
  • Taking chlorophyll before doing a coffee enema is extremely beneficial, as chlorophyll is a binding agent, and helps make sure toxins leave your body and are not reabsorbed after the coffee enema.
  • Researched Nutritionals ToxinPul helps detoxify the body and can assist in removing pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals in both the GI tract and systemically.
  • Endo-Met GB-3 assists in the removal of toxic metals from the liver and supports GI health.

Finally, suppositories can be another great tool to help detoxify your body and heal from mercury toxicity. I recommend rotating OHN Liver Cleanse Essential Oil Blend and OHN Coffee Enema Essential Oil Blend in daily suppositories.

Enemas During Pregnancy

Constipation is often experienced during pregnancy. Although it usually does not become severe, it can reduce quality of life and sometimes lead to the development of anal fissures or hemorrhoids.

Constipation during pregnancy can be caused by changing hormone levels in the body, prenatal vitamins that many expecting mothers take, or pressure from the uterus in later pregnancy. It's important to be as comfortable and pain-free as possible during pregnancy, so avoiding the unpleasantness of constipation is beneficial, and enemas are one of several tools you can use to help with this.

Are Enemas Safe During Pregnancy?

While there are mixed opinions on the safety of enemas during pregnancy, and there has been very little scientific research done on this issue, many pregnant women find themselves needing to take enemas to alleviate uncomfortable constipation.

Many doctors agree that it is possible for enemas to stimulate labor, so while enemas can be perfectly safe and provide constipation relief for many pregnant women, I do recommend talking to your doctor first, especially if you are in your third trimester.

Constipation itself can also trigger preterm uterine contractions, however, so avoiding constipation in whatever way works best for you is important. I have worked with many pregnant women over the past 20+ years, and I find that for most mothers-to-be, enemas are a safe and beneficial thing you can do to improve your health while pregnant. I recommend reading this client's letter about her experience with constipation and enemas during pregnancy, in which she writes:

"I read your book, Ten Days to Optimal Health, and watched some how-to videos to find out how to do an enema. I was extremely cautious and slow with my enema experimentation. I used comfortably warm water and only allowed a small amount of fluid into my bowel at slow intervals so that my bowel could adjust and be completely comfortable with the enema. I did the enemas while soaking in an Epsom salt bath and I quickly felt very relaxed doing enemas. The enemas gave me immense relief and helped me to avoid constipation. I did not have any further uterine contractions and my baby was born at full term, with a wonderful natural birth."

Alternative Constipation Remedies

There are alternative solutions I would recommend pregnant women try if concerned about doing enemas, such as stool softeners and lifestyle and dietary changes.

Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids, eating a lot of healthy fruits, vegetables, and proteins, and minimizing intake of gluten, dairy, and sugar. Doing regular, gentle forms of exercise (if your doctor says this is okay) can also help prevent or relieve constipation.

Additionally, I recommend taking Ortho Reacted Magnesium as a stool softener, which is safe for pregnant women.

Taking Endo-Met GB-3, vitamin C, and a probiotic such as Ortho Biotic can also help move your bowels and improve the health of your microbiome to prevent constipation.

enemas during pregnancy Most doctors recommend avoiding harsher stimulative laxatives while pregnant, because they can induce contractions.

If you do decide to take an enema during your pregnancy, ensure you are in as relaxed a state as possible. Taking the enema during an Epsom salt bath with lavender essential oil can be the perfect calming setting.

As always, especially if you are new to enemas, take things slowly and check in with your body frequently. If you feel any pain or discomfort, do not continue with the enema. If you need any support, feel free to call us at 608-242-0200 or set up a phone consultation with me.

Healing Anal Fissures While Pregnant

Many women develop anal fissures while pregnant or while giving birth. Fissures can be extremely painful and can become a chronic issue for some. I have developed an anal fissure healing protocol that is safe for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers to use. The protocol consists of:
  1. taking daily OHN Anal Fissure Essential Oil Blend suppositories
  2. bathing the area around the fissure daily using Frankincense and Myrrh Goat Milk Soap
  3. applying Super Salve to the fissure 1-3 times per day
  4. using Reacted Magnesium as a stool softener if you are struggling with constipation or hard-to-pass stools
  5. taking MSM daily to help heal the tissues and restore blood flow in the area around the fissure
Some people find colon cleansing with home enemas to be helpful in healing fissures, but again, use caution when attempting to colon cleanse while pregnant, and I recommend trying the above therapies first.

The Dilemma of Constipation While Pregnant (Client Letter)

I can't recall the number of times that I have googled "are enemas safe during pregnancy?". I have never found a meaningful answer to my question. I found lots of commentary and concerns that enemas can trigger uterine contractions, and therefore are risky during pregnancy.

In my first pregnancy I suffered terribly from constipation. I resorted to frequent use of glycerine suppositories to get my bowel to eliminate. Not a good solution!

When I was pregnant with my second child I again experienced constipation. This time the constipation triggered uterine contractions, once at 25 weeks and again around 30 weeks. I was hospitalized each time as a result of the contractions caused by the constipation. Based on these experiences I do agree that bowel spasms can trigger uterine spasms. My "treatment" was a Panadine Forte -- which unfortunately made me even more constipated. Following the hospital stays I decided to try an at-home enema to prevent the build-up and constipation as well as preventing any further uterine contractions. This approach worked for me.

I read Kristina's book, Ten Days to Optimal Health, and watched some how-to videos to find out how to do an enema. I did not have any further uterine contractions and my baby was born at full term, with a wonderful natural birth.

How can I have a pregnancy without constipation?

My question is now, how can I have another child without suffering from the problems caused by poor elimination and inadequate detoxification?

A bit more about my background: I have suffered from constipation for years and years. I adopted a whole foods diet, following the principles of Weston A. Price about 4 years ago. The diet change rapidly improved my immunity and the recurring thrush, viral, throat infections and urinary tract infections that I had suffered from for years disappeared. Unfortunately the diet change did not solve my constipation issues.

With much experimentation I found that I can live free from constipation by eating liberal amounts of saturated fats (fermented cod liver oil, coconut oil, duck and chicken egg yolks, avocado and other fats), including 2 to 3 cups of gelatinous bone broth each day, strictly limiting the amount of cooked protein I eat to around 120 grams per day, eating fresh salads with herbs, avoiding all grains, starches, nuts and seeds, including a liquid magnesium supplement, soaking in Epsom salt and clay baths and getting plenty of exercise.

I no longer need to use enemas to help relieve constipation; the formula above works to get my body eliminating.

We are hoping to have another baby. Recently as part of our preconception care my doctor tested me for MTHFR. I tested positive with two defective genes (I am MTHFR C667T homozygous), which means my body does not metholate effectively. In very simple terms my body is only 10 to 20% effective at detoxifying, instead of 100% effective. Many people suffer symptoms from MTHFR gene mutations without knowing they have a problem. You can be tested for MTHFR through blood tests or through saliva tests (e.g., www.23andme.com).

I have been prescribed supplements to help my body to improve methylation, and in addition to the supplements I have started following the recommendations from an MTHFR expert, Dr. Lynch of www.mthfr.net.

One of the tools Dr. Lynch recommends for detoxification and to help MTHFR sufferers is coffee enemas. I started using enemas again last year to do coffee enemas. I am amazed at the physical difference and calmness I have experienced from regular coffee enemas. They also allow me to make lifestyle and diet changes without suffering from detox symptoms. I have started experimenting with adding geranium to my coffee enemas as it increases glutathione levels. So far I love it. It smells beautiful and makes me feel good.

So, what is the answer to the pregnancy constipation dilemma? There is no definitive answer, and one person's medicine is another person's poison. No one can make guarantees about what will cause a pregnancy to go smoothly. There may be risks of uterine contractions triggered by bowel spasms. My experience and personal choice would be to use enemas if I need them in a future pregnancy. I feel that the risks of doing an enema at home, in a relaxed state, slowly and peacefully, are very, very low. That said, I would also choose to eat raw egg yolks and raw meat during a pregnancy, which I also consider very low risk (as long as they are sourced from reliable farmers). For some women my "low risk" choices would be seen as very high risk. I think that the dilemma of constipation during pregnancy is a matter of considering your risk appetite, choosing what you are prepared to experiment with and being calm and peaceful in your actions.

A final word about raising babies and children on organic whole foods diets

It is amazingly hard work to source fresh organic whole foods, cook almost everything from scratch, make bone broth, ferment sauerkraut, and cover the enormous cost of eating this way (compared to cheap, processed grain-based foods). It is also very hard work convincing young children that eating bread and cake is bad for their health and will damage their facial and physical development as well as compromise their immunity... and that taking fermented cod liver oil, drinking stock and eating caviar is a good idea! My experience is that it is worth it. It is early days for me as my children are still young, and I certainly do not have all of the answers. So far I feel that the results are worth the effort. My youngest has never been sick, he has beautiful big eyes, big white teeth, a gorgeous smile and a very sharp mind. My eldest has never been sick, but has had some dental decay (which is a form of illness and compromised immunity). My kids exist in the world, have contact with school kids and exposure to others. Their immunity seems strong. I don't believe they would be as they are if they were raised on a diet which included processed foods, processed sugar and processed grains. I am grateful for what I have learned, for the wisdom shared by Weston A. Price, Kristina Amelong, and other authors, and I pray each day that my children, my husband and I continue to be blessed with health.

My Mind Meets Lake Superior

Lately, I've felt stressed out, overwhelmed, easily triggered into a deep sense of dread by tasks that I usually handle easily -- answering the work phone, making lunch for my daughter, doing the dishes after a full day -- all simple, often meditative tasks. I would try to remind myself to breathe more deeply or of how much I love this work of life -- helping people, parenting, keeping a house; but, I couldn’t shake the overwhelm.

Now, after five days on Lake Superior, I can reflect that I needed time away to do nothing. I hadn't had more than a few sustained hours away from work for over a year. Yes, I love my work and life, so I often do not get the feeling that I need a vacation, but my mind and soul were craving other things.

When time away on Lake Superior emerged as a possibility, I found it surprisingly easy to cover my responsibilities.

My partner and I jumped into my black Prius, packed up our kombuchas, sardines, wintergreen essential oil, pocket knife, and iPhones, and left Madison. Six hours later, we arrived on the shores of the immense lake, near the Devils Island sandstone sea caves in Cornucopia, Wisconsin -- with nothing to do.

What did I find? Simple beauty: the beauty of my toes meeting the lake as the surf came in and left, came in and left; the beauty of an aquamarine bug I'd never seen before crawling on my hand; of nothingness; of light meeting sand; of a daddy longlegs scurrying across a stone sculpture. I also found memory and transformation. I remembered when, as a child, I would pull those towering, thread-like legs off the beautiful brown body and I felt horrified, horrified that I could add to the suffering of the world. I shivered, and moved on, pleased at the changes in myself. Later that day, I found an amber moon, setting on the eastern horizon of the lake, becoming a glowing tooth and then dropping down to a pinpoint of light. Moon on Lake Superior. I had never seen the moon set in this way. Then, in turn, the Perseid meteor shower. Not even planned. (How did that happen?) Then, the Northern Lights, all in one night, as we sat on a deserted beach next to our campfire.

I like this thing called life.

Sometimes, in these pages, I find it challenging to really share the depth of healing that I'd like for everyone. Yes, enemas work. Daily, I answer the phone or read the emails and find the joy of a story that someone's life has been profoundly improved. Here is one such story I've recently been honored to hear:

"About 6 months ago, thanks to a few blogs and your informational website, my life has changed. Literally. Lost half of my colon and rectum from cancer. Life was miserable. With no holding tank, I lived on Imodium and just not eating, because I went to the bathroom for hours at a time. Anyway, I learned about your enemas and I have a life away from the restroom. If there is anyone you think I can help that is going through a rough time and is on the fence about enemas every day, let me know.

Now I'm able to get back in life. I am very grateful for your passion and willingness to share your knowledge. Cranked up my hobby band again. Thank you soooo much."

~ Bob S.

I wrote back:

"This is awesome, Bob. And any more details would be useful! I'm sure your story will make a difference to others. I'm so happy you found the enema!"

Bob replied:

"OK, kiddo, here goes:

Life was miserable after losing half of my colon and my rectum. Stage three colon/rectal cancer. With no holding tank (rectum), feces would ease out 24/7. Three to four hours at a time with a brief break. The area stayed inflamed from overuse. Sleep? Forget about it. Going absolutely crazy. Got to where I would not go anywhere. As grateful as I was for my doctors saving my life, I was just miserable. Was told the only option was a permanent colostomy. Tried all kinds of foods. High fiber to slow it down. Nothing worked. Was diagnosed with LARS (lower anterior resection syndrome). Imodium no go. Tried everything over the counter. No go. I didn't have loose bowels or constipation, just no holding tank. Like a Pez candy dispenser, just constant small pellet eliminations. Food in general would trigger bathroom duty. My record was 23 trips to the restroom in an hour and a half one Thanksgiving. My parents just hugged me and left crying.

Enough pity pot; let's get into solutions. The first enema I took gave me 23 hours of no bathroom duty. Yup, you read that right. Based on my experience, anyone that would benefit from emptying their large colon would benefit from what I call a proper enema. Was I scared to do an enema after the aftermath of chemo, surgeries, radiation, etc., etc., etc.? Sure, but I was desperate. A proper enema to me is as Kristina (angel with wings) suggests on her website. It gave sooo much information. I had never read that a daily enema was an option. Well, drum roll: I have done an enema a day for about five months, and guess what? No problems. Why? Beats me; I just did what was suggested. Bought a stainless bucket, quality surgical hose, and medium-size nozzle. Used salve, OHN Colon Cleanse Essential Oil Blend, splash of Celtic Sea Salt, goat's milk soap, warm water, and my iPad (something to read). Forty-five minutes later, all done. As in 24 hours done. I use the 2-quart bucket.

Can you do an enema every day without problems? Absolutely. Just get the proper equipment (goes a lot faster) and the proper additives to the warm water. There are numerous additional positives to a clean colon. A little weird at first with the flow of water, however I don't even think about it anymore. A little crampy after all the solution is in, then as it starts coming out it's very cleansing. Has my life changed. Wow, wow, wow. Cruise, anyone? Pack the bucket and let's go. What can I eat? Anything. Do I get any sleep? Zzzzzzzzzz. Do I feel 20 again? Sorry, Charlie. I'm still 50 when I creak out of bed. Is my life perfect? No. Is it better? Way mucho. Best 45 minutes of the day.

Why am I writing this? I suffered almost two years before running across this website. I was desperate. Now? I have a life. You can do this. You can do this. You can do this."

~ Bob S. (have enema, will travel)

Yes, I teach people how to colon cleanse, how to relieve physical suffering, how to enhance their lives with an enema, how to feel better. And, I'd like to continue to grow this colon cleanse website to its full potential as a healing resource, to share within its pages the millions of ways there are to restore a body, a heart, and a soul. Yes, the enema, even daily, can restore a life and thus sometimes a soul, like time to do nothing but notice existence on a vacation on Lake Superior. How else do we restore, and grow, the many facets of our lives? Here are a few ideas. If you find time, please share your own journey.
