Beware Counterfeit Nutritional Supplements on Amazon!

It is well-known that many consumers turn to online retail behemoth Amazon for cheaper alternatives on many types of products that they traditionally would have bought at local brick-and-mortar stores. In addition to lower prices and enticing shipping deals, the simple convenience of items being delivered to one's doorstep is often a driving factor in a consumer deciding to shop from Amazon.

Perhaps understandably, but very unfortunately, this ever-increasing inclination to visit Amazon for much of one's shopping needs extends to nutritional supplements, which have become a riskier arena for consumers. Numerous investigations by consumer advocacy groups over the years have revealed that unauthorized third-party resellers on Amazon have been able to sell counterfeit versions of many top-selling supplements. We should not be surprised that counterfeiters are able to profit by exploiting Amazon's trust factor to sell fake products (supplements and so much more) to unsuspecting Amazon customers, because the reality is that it's very difficult for Amazon to adequately police the tens of thousands of third-party sellers who sell products through the site. Some counterfeiters are of course caught and shut down, but many others continue to operate through stealth and deceptive strategies. In chameleon-like fashion, many counterfeiters exploit Amazon's e-commerce infrastructure by shifting from one seller name to another. If one seller account gets shut down, a counterfeiter may have several other accounts to fall back on, often maintaining overall visibility on Amazon through these shifting accounts. Typically at least some of a counterfeiter's Amazon accounts may be created as "throwaway" accounts to ensure that the deception survives over the longer term.

Counterfeit supplements typically include inert fillers rather than the active ingredients that appear on the label. In many cases, products not containing what the label indicates can obviously present dangers to consumers, who may be unknowingly ingesting substances that they are allergic to, or could seriously harm them in other ways. Not all ingredient substitutions by counterfeiters are inert!

Counterfeiting has also been discovered in nutritional product lines for pets. Nutramax Laboratories, a pet supplement specialist, states that "the counterfeit products we have examined to date were essentially made of a starchy filler compound that is often used in pills, capsules, and other ingestible products... Pets are not receiving any of the needed health benefits of authentic Nutramax products. For these reasons, we are treating these counterfeit products as a threat to pets' safety and well-being."

The wellness protocols I have developed and present on the Optimal Health Network website, and recommend through my personal health consultations with clients, include a wide array of quality supplements for both humans and their pets. We take extensive measures to assess the reputation and safety standards of our supplement vendors, and all nutritional supplements sold through our website are guaranteed authentic and accurate as labeled.

One of our long-time vendors, Ortho Molecular, partners exclusively with health care providers and has been working diligently in recent years to get illegal online sellers of its products off of Amazon and other retail sites. It is a battle that Ortho Molecular fights every day as part of its dedication to ensuring and nurturing the safest channel for bringing its products to consumers: via formal dialogue between health practitioners and their patients, within a context of an individualized health assessment and the dispensing of products via an established practitioner/vendor relationship.

OHN strongly believes in doctor/patient interaction as a basis for implementing health and wellness protocols and always encourages its customers to make product purchases based on consultation with a family doctor or other medical professional. Furthermore, as a certified colon hydrotherapist and nutritional consultant, I welcome one-on-one health consultations with my clients via a secure online intake form and appointment booking system. Through these consultations and follow-up dispensing of products via phone purchase or OHN's website, I strive to ensure that my clients are receiving the appropriate individual support they need, and with clinically proven products that are accurate as labeled. While clients can sometimes find cheaper prices for my prescribed products on Amazon, this is potentially a dangerous gamble given the many documented instances of product counterfeiting by third-party resellers. Buyer beware!

Natural Relief from Opioid Constipation

Opioids are effective pain relievers. However, opioids often have the side effect of constipation. How do opioids cause constipation?

These addictive pharmaceuticals cause constipation by affecting the gastrointestinal tract in a variety of ways. Opioids increase the amount of time it takes stool to move through the gastric system. Opioids increase nonpropulsive contractions in the middle of the small intestine (jejunum) and decrease longitudinal propulsive peristalsis - motions critical to moving food through the intestines. Due to this muscular interference, food fails to travel effectively through the digestive tract.

Opioids are also able to partially paralyze the stomach (gastroparesis) so that food remains in this digestive organ for a longer period of time. Additionally, opioids reduce digestive secretions and decrease the urge to defecate.

In the last 15 years alone, opioid abuse has drastically increased by about 200%. For more perspective, in 2014 the number of opioid drug overdose deaths reached 47,055 people, or the equivalent of about 125 Americans every day.

The dispensing of opioid analgesics in the U.S. grew from nearly 149 million prescriptions in early 2003 to 207 million in 2013.

Opioid-induced constipation:
  • is one of the most common types of constipation
  • does not tend to to go away over time
  • can cause fecal impaction, overflow diarrhea, and pseudo-obstruction if left untreated
  • is usually difficult to manage and unresponsive to common treatment regimens
  • can occur at opioid doses lower than those needed to produce effective analgesia in many patients
  • decreases intestinal motility, so fiber intake is not recommended

Optimal Health Network can help!

COFFEE ENEMAS - Coffee enemas have a long history of both reducing pain and relieving constipation. Before you try opioids, take a daily coffee enema for a month.

SUPPOSITORIES - For some, Optimal Health Network’s Coffee Enema Essential Oil Blend used in a daily suppository is a better choice due to not having space or time to take daily enemas.

REACTED MAGNESIUM - Magnesium is a therapeutic, laxative-like supplement that can be titrated to bowel tolerance. It is a safe and effective method of emptying the bowel daily for adults, children, and infants.

DIET - The Ten Days to Optimal Health program is a clinically proven, easy-to-follow dietary and colon cleanse program, making it an excellent cure for constipation.

EMOTIONAL HEALING - Working with your emotions around pain and addiction can be vital in overcoming opioid dependency. Kristina Amelong has worked with thousands of clients since 1998, and can support you to overcome opioid dependency.

Eating Program Aids Detoxification Better Than Fasting

by Stephanie Carnes
OHN Contributor

Fasting in Today's World

Fasting using only water, and more recently only vegetable juice and water, is an ancient cornerstone of both physical and spiritual healing. However, due to our current toxic ways of living and the lack of healthy fats in our diet, our bodies don’t have enough resources to address the biochemical needs of a fast. The needed nutrient stores in our bodies are too little and the stored toxins in our bodies are too great for a simple fast to address. Today, fasting can easily make people very sick and almost always makes people less healthy.

Fasting does seem to work wonders for a person with an acute illness. During the flu or another sudden illness, our bodies don’t desire food; our body’s intelligence knows that there is something to get rid of within our digestive tracts. This bodily wisdom works wonders to rid the body of an unwanted virus or bacteria. However, most people need to get rid of environmental toxins, and most people also need to rebuild their bodies. You know this if you are feeling chronically run-down, sick with Fibromyalgia or another illness.

Regardless of how healthy you think you are, NEVER fast without significant support: the synthetic chemical toxin load in human fat and muscle today is much greater than that which even a healthy body can handle. In other words, we are all so toxic that even brief fasting is often damaging to the liver and other organs. Thirty years ago this was largely not the case, but today it is.

What Foods Aid Detoxification?

The Optimal Health Network cleansing program does have a nutritious liquids fast at the end of a high-nutrient cleansing diet, as indicated fully in Ten Days to Optimal Health. (Amelong 2006) Both the diet and the fast are based on the principles of eating nutritionally dense and cleansing foods such as raw dairy products and other high-quality fats and proteins, fruits, vegetables, and vegetable juices.

Some of this nutritional guidance is new; for instance, the importance of fats in cleansing has been widely misunderstood. Few people, even few alternative health practitioners, know that raw, grass-fed butter is one of our most potent medicinal foods used to detoxify the body. What a revolutionary idea—quality fats actually work to aid the body’s natural cleansing processes!
Therapeutic amounts of raw fats actually draw toxins out of the cells. Most cleansing programs only carry toxins out of the main circulation and not from deep within each cell, tissue and organ.

How Do We Remove Stored Toxins?

Eating therapeutic types and therapeutic amounts of fats and oil is our most effective way to remove toxins. Your body cannot fully or easily detoxify without fats and oils within your circulation and deeply integrated into the cells. You need raw fats and oils because lipase, the fat-splitting enzyme, assures that the fats and oils can be taken into the cells. Once the body has the needed fats and oils, the tools of colon cleansing can assure that the toxins are removed and not re-circulated throughout the body.

Inflammation

Inflammation is a protective mechanism; an attempt by the body to remove harmful stimuli and to initiate the healing process. However, as our bodies create repeated inflammation due to daily exposure to a variety of toxins, this chronic inflammation creates a variety of problems in itself. Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, hay fever, and atherosclerosis are some of the conditions brought on by unrelenting inflammation.

Because inflammation can be a significant problem for many of us, we are continuously in search of solutions. Generally I might recommend treatments such as fish oil, enzymes, Boswellia, licorice root, Echinacea, dietary changes, coffee enemas, exercise, and rest. However, recently while enjoying a sailing excursion on Madison's Lake Mendota with a friend of mine who is an RN in a cardiac intensive care unit, I learned of a new solution to dangerous inflammation which is being embraced by the medical community.

In a medical emergency, when one's heart stops and is restarted, there is an inflammatory response in the brain caused by the unmediated restoration of blood flow after 6 to 10 minutes of inactivity. This inflammation is generally fatal.

The new solution to acute inflammation in the brain is called therapeutic hypothermia, in which the patient's body is iced to lower his or her temperature by about 6 degrees and a coma is induced for up to 24 hours. This process limits inflammation and can allow a person to return to a healthy life after the heart has been inactive for up to 20 minutes.

In my ongoing search for solutions to chronic inflammation, I am interested in learning how I might be able to translate this technique that addresses acute inflammation into a more broadly applicable solution.

Can Diet and Lifestyle Trump Genetics?

by Stephanie Carnes
OHN Contributor

There is a history of cancer in my family along with diabetes and high blood pressure. But how does this hereditary backdrop affect my life? Up until a few years ago I had a mild doom and gloom mentality about the fate of my health. That was, until I started to uncover how the body is actually designed to heal itself and function optimally under the correct environmental conditions.

"Genetic influences account for about 30% of aging problems. The other 70% comes from lifestyle," says Dr. Moira Fodyce, a gerontologist at Stanford University of Medicine. (Los Angeles Times, 2007) Our choices, more than anything, have the potential to make or break our health!

As referenced by Dr. Mercola, a study out of New Zealand challenged the myth that obesity is caused by "bad genes." Scientists confirmed that genetic pre-disposition to obesity is entirely preventable with good nutrition during early childhood. I would contend that the cause of most of our health problems is not a result of our genetic code primarily, but rather lifestyle and environmental influences such as toxic overload due to smoking, excessive drinking, pollutants in the air and drinking water, and processed food diets high in refined sugars and low in healthy fats.

The Optimal Health Center specializes in diet, nutrition, and detoxification means that aid the body's natural healing mechanisms. Health consultations are available at our Madison, Wisconsin based health clinic or by phone.
