More on How to Detox

How do people know or recognize the signs that they have dangerous toxins stored in their bodies?

If you are living in this century, on Earth, it is very likely that you need to detoxify your body. Most people are not aware of their toxicity levels because we are polluted over time and we slowly forget what it feels like to be healthy and energetic. A certain signal that we need to cleanse is when we are diagnosed with a chronic disorder, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, fibroids, arthritis, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue. For many of us, frequent bouts of gas, bloating, or feeling run down are certain signals from our body that we need to detoxify. Even with no symptoms, aging itself reduces our body’s ability to detoxify. And, unfortunately, our world is getting more toxic everyday. What happens when you detoxify?

You Can Heal

As I share in my book, Ten Days to Optimal Health, I started my healing journey in the 12-step programs Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These resources were crucial in tackling my drug and alcohol addictions. Being  part of these programs was one of the best things that I have ever done. Yes, I worked the steps, read the Big Book. Another book that I was introduced to those 20-plus years ago was Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life. Reading her book, I was introduced to the concept that what I thought mattered, and not only mattered but might just determine how my life went, how good my health was, how good my relationships were, and how I was doing economically. Since my thoughts were consistently negative at this time in my life -- nobody likes me, I hate myself, I'd rather die than live this life, pain, pain and more pain -- I felt I would give these unlikely healing tools a try. After all, I felt life had to get better if I was thinking "I love myself'" rather than "I wish I was dead."

My body now restores itself to its natural state of good health.
My income is constantly increasing.
I do the work I love.
I am passionate about life.
I am well.

I did these affirmations and more hundreds of time a day. It felt silly but now, 22 years later, I offer here that what I think absolutely makes a difference to the quality of my life. I created OptimalHealthNetwork.com and the Optimal Health Center coming from an earlier life where my highest aspirations were to some day own a McDonald's. Yes, I recommend Hay's book, You Can Heal Your Life. And now you can watch her entire movie, You Can Heal Your Life, on YouTube, in which she is joined by many other healers such as Esther Hicks, Greg Bradden, Candace Pert, and Christian Northrup, who all share their own experiences with changing their thinking to change their life. Funny, but after writing this blog post, I realize that throughout my book, Ten Days to Optimal Health, and my website, I repeat over and over again: You Can Heal. Yes, Louise Hay's work has had a profound influence on my life. Yes, I have experienced tremendous healing on many levels in my own life, creating this business and recovering my body from a chronic illness of celiac disease, multiple chemical sensitivities, depression, and more.

The Daily Practice: A Healing Tool

Back to the healing tool of the daily practice. Again, choose any daily activity that truly nourishes your soul, truly brings you a deeper sense of purpose in your life – playing an instrument, exercise like yoga, meditation, service in your community, studying a passion like How the Universe Began or Quantum Physics, or, one of my daily blessings – Free or Contemplative writing. 

Below, I share one of my ten-minute timed writings.

Write one of those six-word life stories. Kittens. Pain. Expansion. Flowers blooming in the spring. But is that too many words? A black-capped chickadee flitting onto my wooden bird feeder, enchanting with its presence. A brother who rode his bike while a green car determined to meet him with fate or destiny, I'm not yet sure which. Could you tell me? Water – not drinking – but diving into, black – below a baby blue sky salted with tall, white clouds. I could hold my breath longer than the other children. Floating cold, but not dead like my brother. McDonald's as home, teacher, emerging self – not just flipping burgers and capping bubbly diet Cokes for the cars in the drive thru. Only six words, I know: Love, longing, beauty, animals, loneliness, effort. Six words. Now more words about those six words. I loved toads, baby pigeons, horses, muddy waters, and my brother Jay. I longed for love, belonging, being touched by anyone – later on I wasn't choosy. Beauty is now the name of my cat. Beauty is what my daughter breathes in with every movement. Yes, even as she rides her Ripstick, plays the piano, wraps her arms around me, and whimpers on the couch. Animals – have ever seen a mass of birds I'll move in unison? Loneliness – I was in Mexico on a Spanish class trip in sixth grade. I woke in the middle of the night with diarrhea. I hid my underwear deep in the garbage can of my hotel  bathroom. In the morning I was awoken by the same underwear swaying in my face. "Whose are these?" "Not mine," I maintained, wishing I could disappear into the black spaces between stars. Effort – what can I say except now I write.

What is Optimal Health?

As the creator of two successful businesses in the healing arts (the Optimal Health Center and the Optimal Health Network), as a recovering person, as a healer, as someone who has worked with a chronic illness for 15 years, I wish to share more on what I have learned from my endeavors toward optimal health.

It is certain that there are as many ways to purposely engage in striving toward optimal mental, emotional, and physical health as there are people. Let’s start our exploration with the daily practice (more on this idea in future posts).

Some people meditate, some people exercise, some people drink coffee, some people watch TV, some people play music: the list of possibilities for a daily practice goes on and on. Most of these are not inherently unhealthy, as long as they are done in balance with our many other needs. A daily practice simply needs to meet our needs. For instance, a daily practice might bring us vitality, a sense of being grounded, hope, community, beauty, and balance, to name a few elements of a rich life.

One of my daily practices is contemplative writing. I begin with a prompt. I then write for 20 minutes without lifting the pencil, without editing. I write this way in a class format, one-on-one, and in solitude, writing every day.

Here is a sample of yesterday’s daily writing practice. The context was my last Contemplative Writing class in an 8-week series. Our prompt, in short, was endings, letting go, and what we were taking with us. This piece of writing was written without preparation, without lifting the pencil, and without editing:

Life’s Journey

Earlier today, Georgia O’Keeffe visited my house. She was carrying purple petunias, bones, red poppies, and a sky full of clouds. She told me that during the last years of her life’s journey, she sat in her home on a rocker, as her home sat in the desert in New Mexico. While she sat and it sat, she listened; she listened to Juan Hamilton, who would very soon scatter her ashes in the mountains, read The Book of Tea by Kakuzo Okakura. She told me that nothing filled her last days with more joy than hearing those simple words of detail about the history of tea, the Japanese tea ceremony, flowering arranging, the tea pot, the tea cup. She reminded me that she was blind during those last years, that she could only see color, pattern, shape, line, contour, light, dark within her mind, as memory, and as experience.

I reminded her that her purple petunias, bones, red poppies, and skies full of clouds were keeping me from joining her on the mountain top, becoming soil, wind, tree, water – everything.

I thanked her and she went on her way, only pausing to kneel down and stroke my tortoise-shell kitten, with her oranges and blacks, between the ears, all the way down to the tip of the tail. There was a smile between the two of them as Georgia rose again and walked out the door.

In my gratitude for all of Georgia’s gifts, I am reminded of my fellow classmates – Marie and Nan and Zinnia and Toni and Meg – and their gifts. I am reminded of the way they have welcomed me into the intimate spaces of their minds, into the way their arms move from one side of the page to the other as those same minds spill onto the page, of the way they have each opened those same arms to not only my writing, but also to me. I thank them, as, for now, I would rather stay amongst the blue square sitting mats, the purple and red fleece blankets, and the sounds of cars passing-by outside than to join Georgia on the mountaintop. Yes, thank you.

Okay, now what? I am interested in continuing my writing, as the twenty minutes are not up. Is the pain I feel around family members simply like a sky full of Georgia clouds? Is the confusion I feel simply a garden full of red poppies?

Okay, twenty minutes! When will you end? I am ready to rest now.

Even though I didn’t realize this was a goal of mine, an absolute necessity to survive, I am now realizing that I need to let go of other people’s feelings and actions toward me, even the ones that could hurt me, and just love them. Sometimes, I feel it is unjust to not respond with painful emotion towards negativity in my direction, but Thich Nhat Hanh tells me to simply love. (Time’s up.)
