Mercury Toxicity and
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

Sources of Mercury Exposure

Mercury is a highly toxic chemical element that can be found in thermometers, electrical equipment, fluorescent light bulbs, dental fillings, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, seafood, and industrial waste.

Despite its toxicity, mercury is still used in dental amalgams (the silver-colored material used to fill teeth after removal of a cavity) in most of the world.

As a byproduct of industrialization, mercury can find its way into soil and water sources, and from there into the food we eat. Consuming foods that contain mercury is the most common cause of mercury poisoning, particularly for those who eat a lot of fish or other seafood, due to the mercury exposure and build-up that occurs in fish and other sea creatures living in polluted waters.

Other sources of possible mercury poisoning can include broken oral or rectal thermometers and exposure to toxic air or water if you live or work in highly industrialized areas.

Very small amounts of mercury are not necessarily harmful to your health, but significant mercury exposure can be very dangerous, even life-threatening, and in general we should all be trying to limit our exposure to mercury as much as possible.

Symptoms of Mercury Poisoning

Symptoms associated with mercury poisoning are primarily neurological and include:
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • irritability
  • memory problems
  • tremors
  • numbness, especially in hands and feet
  • speech difficulty
  • muscle weakness and lack of coordination
  • changes in vision and hearing
  • trouble walking
  • insomnia

How To Diagnose Mercury Poisoning

You can test your mercury levels using either a blood test or a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA).

Blood tests may give you the information you need about your body's mercury and other heavy metal levels, but it's also possible for blood tests to give you completely normal (but inaccurate) results even if you have elevated mercury levels. This is because the body is constantly removing heavy metals from the blood as a protective measure, and depositing them into tissues such as your bones, teeth, and hair.

For most heavy metals, including mercury, blood tests are primarily accurate for acute exposure to heavy metals (taking the test within 3-5 days of significant exposure should show elevated heavy metal levels), but are less accurate for testing longer-term heavy metal toxicity, because mercury (or copper, lead, etc.) levels decrease rapidly from the blood after initial exposure. Therefore, I recommend using a hair tissue mineral analysis to most accurately determine your body's heavy metal levels, and whether or not you have mercury toxicity.

Treatment for Mercury Poisoning

The first and most important way to treat mercury toxicity is to stop all possible sources of exposure. This may include removing seafood from your diet, replacing any fillings you have that contain mercury, and removing any other environmental sources of mercury you may be exposed to.

Additionally, doctors often recommend chelation therapy for severe cases of mercury poisoning to help the body remove and dispose of mercury. This type of therapy does have side effects and risks, so it's best to use only when necessary. If you think you have severe mercury poisoning, see a doctor right away.

I also recommend regularly doing my 3-step enema series protocol — which consists of two therapeutic cleansing enemas followed by a coffee enema — to help detox your body from many toxins and heavy metals, including mercury.

There are also several supplements I recommend taking to help heal from mercury toxicity (or heavy metal toxicity in general): hair tissue mineral analysis
  • OHN Heavy Metals Detox Kit (pictured) — This kit contains four key supplements, including Ortho Z-Binder and Endo-Met GB-3, to help you detox from toxic heavy metals including copper, mercury, aluminum, and lead.
  • Ortho Z-Binder — This is a broad-spectrum, naturally sourced binding formula which supports enhanced clearance of heavy metals from the GI tract. Binders have been used for centuries to treat toxin exposure and play an important role in many detoxification protocols.
  • Taking chlorophyll before doing a coffee enema is extremely beneficial, as chlorophyll is a binding agent, and helps make sure toxins leave your body and are not reabsorbed after the coffee enema.
  • Researched Nutritionals ToxinPul helps detoxify the body and can assist in removing pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals in both the GI tract and systemically.
  • Endo-Met GB-3 assists in the removal of toxic metals from the liver and supports GI health.

Finally, suppositories can be another great tool to help detoxify your body and heal from mercury toxicity. I recommend rotating OHN Liver Cleanse Essential Oil Blend and OHN Coffee Enema Essential Oil Blend in daily suppositories.

Featured Product: ATP Fuel

Chronic fatigue and low energy levels are problems that affect millions of Americans. One of the most powerful supplements that we sell to combat these issues and help your body reach optimal energy levels is Researched Nutritionals ATP Fuel®.

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is a complex organic chemical that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells, e.g. muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, and chemical synthesis.

ATP Fuel is designed to support the Krebs Cycle of cellular energy production and promote healthy mitochondrial membrane function.

The Krebs Cycle, which takes place inside the mitochondria (also known as the "power plant" of the cell), is the primary way in which your body’s cells generate energy. By supporting this process, ATP Fuel is a very beneficial supplement, formulated specifically for athletes and patients seeking optimized energy.

ATP Fuel® combines three key energy nutrients and cofactors for maximum mitochondrial performance and energy production:

1. NT Factor Energy™
2. NADH
3. CoQ10

1. Benefits of NT Factor Energy:

NT Factor Energy helps repair mitochondrial membranes that have been compromised due to acute and/or long-term health challenges. When mitochondrial membranes are damaged, your energy levels are reduced. A healthy mitochondrial membrane allows more nutrients into the mitochondria to support the Krebs Cycle, and promotes healthier (reduced) levels of oxidative stress.

The typical cell contains an average of 1,000 mitochondria. Given that there are roughly 10 trillion cells in a healthy adult, productive mitochondria are critical to maintain the body's energy and resilience.

NT Factor Energy also promotes the burning of glucose, which creates energy and removes excess fatigue-causing ammonia from your body.

2. Benefits of NADH:

NADH is the reduced coenzyme form of vitamin B3 or B-Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide. This "reducing" power (its ability to donate electrons) is what drives ATP production.

NADH is fundamental in the chemical process of converting the food we eat into cellular energy. Each unit of NADH creates three units of ATP (the body’s energy fuel).

NADH also helps promote healthy emotional balance.

3. Benefits of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10):

Coenzyme Q10 is a compound found naturally in the mitochondria and is involved in the making of ATP. ATP serves as the cell’s major energy source and drives a number of biological processes including muscle contraction and the production of protein.

CoQ10 promotes healthy energy levels, enhances the immune system, and helps protect cells from oxidative damage. A growing body of research suggests that using coenzyme Q10 supplements alone or in combination with other drug therapies and nutritional supplements supports a healthy heart, periodontal (gum) health, and cognitive and nerve health.

Research has also shown that CoQ10 production decreases with age, so ensuring adequate levels of CoQ10 is especially important for the elderly.

CONCLUSION

These three key features of ATP Fuel combine to create an effective and beneficial supplement for those prone to chronic fatigue and low energy levels.

The following product review from one of our customers echoes sentiments that we hear almost daily regarding ATP Fuel:

"I couldn't work. I had no energy. I struggled with headaches and digestive upsets. Then, I took a hair tissue mineral analysis and found out I had copper toxicity. After just three months, I am back at work and feel so much better. I am even swimming most days. ATP Fuel is one of the supplements Kristina recommended and I found it was a cornerstone of my healing. Please, if you are sick, please reach out to Kristina. She is affordable and knows what she is doing. Or just start taking ATP Fuel, as it works with each cell and I think can make a big difference for those of us struggling with exhaustion."

If you are struggling with frequently feeling exhausted, or are seeking to improve your energy levels, give ATP Fuel a try and/or schedule a health consultation with me to receive additional individualized support.

Genetics or Environment: Which Determines Your Health?

Linus Pauling, the founding father of molecular biology and author of Vitamin C and the Common Cold, scientifically demonstrated that the origin of disease is based on specific changes in genetic materials due to environmental influences. Bishop and Waldolz, in Genome, point out that "aberrant genes do not, in and of themselves, cause disease. By and large their impact on an individual's health is minimal until the person is plunged into a harmful environment..." (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1990). In February 2006, The National Institutes of Health launched the Genes, Environment and Health Initiative (GEI) to support research that will lead to the understanding of genetic contributions and gene-environment interactions in common disease. Each person's gene pool has the flexibility to express itself with health and longevity, or with illness and degenerative disease, depending on environmental conditions.

Given that the environment and health are so entwined and given that many environmental influences — stress, inadequate nutrition, toxins — modify genetic expression towards disease, wouldn't it be fantastic to have a tool to accurately monitor your health on an ongoing basis? Your conventional medical doctor uses blood tests. Unfortunately, blood tests often look good until something is "really" wrong.

Recently, I was talking to a client whose medical doctor had told him, "There is nothing wrong with you, but there is really nothing right."

On the other hand, your hair can provide unique metabolic and intracellular information more readily than your blood. First of all, human blood is highly regulated to stay within narrow ranges. For instance, a buffer of carbonic acid and bicarbonate is present in blood plasma to maintain a pH between 7.35 and 7.45. These buffer solutions are necessary because many enzymes work only under very precise conditions. Because of this, the blood is often not an effective diagnostic tool for metabolic imbalance. Second of all, toxins such as lead are instantly removed from the blood as a protective measure. For 30 to 40 days following an acute lead exposure, elevated serum levels of lead are undetectable in the blood. Smartly, our bodies deposit the metal into tissues such as the liver, bones, teeth, and hair.

The hair is analyzed through a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA).

HTMA areas of analysis are:
  • Mineral/electrolyte levels in the body's tissues including calcium, chromium, magnesium, selenium, sodium, potassium, nickel, iron, copper, lithium, and zinc. All these minerals are key to good health. If you don’t know your mineral levels, how do you know if you need a multi-vitamin or how much of that multi-vitamin you need to take each day? Also, did you know that calcium loss from the body can become so advanced that severe osteoporosis can develop without any appreciable changes noted in the calcium levels in a blood test? And, did you know that magnesium is required for normal muscular function, especially the heart, and that magnesium deficiency has been associated with an increased incidence of heart attacks, anxiety, and nervousness?
  • Toxic metal levels including lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and aluminum. Hair is used as one of the tissues of choice by the Environmental Protection Agency in determining toxic metal exposure. A 1980 report from the EPA stated that human hair can be effectively used for biological monitoring of toxic metals. The average person is continually exposed to toxic metal sources such as cigarette smoke (cadmium), hair dyes (lead), hydrogenated oils (nickel), anti-perspirants (aluminum), dental amalgams (mercury and cadmium), copper and aluminum cookware, and lead-based cosmetics. Your body is designed to cleanse; without this mechanism, you would die. If your individual biochemical needs are being meet, you can fight off pollution and the ill effects of stress and your biochemistry. However, most of us aren't. An HTMA allows you to track the heavy metals and biochemical stress within your own body, assisting you to create and more easily follow a personalized health plan.
  • Significant mineral ratios that help determine carbohydrate metabolism, thyroid function, level of inflammation, adrenal reserves, copper toxicity, and tissue breakdown.

Take an HTMA seasonally to develop a nutritional program that is tailored to your body's particular requirements to assist it to express health and longevity.

More on How to Detox

How do people know or recognize the signs that they have dangerous toxins stored in their bodies?

If you are living in this century, on Earth, it is very likely that you need to detoxify your body. Most people are not aware of their toxicity levels because we are polluted over time and we slowly forget what it feels like to be healthy and energetic. A certain signal that we need to cleanse is when we are diagnosed with a chronic disorder, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, fibroids, arthritis, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue. For many of us, frequent bouts of gas, bloating, or feeling run down are certain signals from our body that we need to detoxify. Even with no symptoms, aging itself reduces our body’s ability to detoxify. And, unfortunately, our world is getting more toxic everyday. If you wish to determine which toxins are stored in your individual body, use a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis.

What happens when you detoxify?

Daily living tends to drive toxins and diseases further into your body, while cleansing and healing lets these wastes and diseases surface and leave your body. Toxins and illness leave your body via your skin, your lymphatic system, your lungs, your colon, and your urinary tract. A classic cleansing response is seen when people quit smoking and they end up having a few "colds." Often, the symptoms are not of a cold virus at all, but rather the body’s way of throwing off the toxins accumulated in the body. Within all the phlegm leaving the body are many of the toxic, carcinogenic residues of cigarette smoking. This cleansing response happens for many, but not all. For all people, however, a DETOXIFYING PROGRAM BRINGS BETTER HEALTH. I have worked with thousands of clients since I became a colon hydrotherapist and I can most definitively say this is absolutely true: a DETOXIFYING PROGRAM BRINGS BETTER HEALTH.

However, as my last blog post speaks to, how you choose to detox is critical to the useful of any individual detox program.

Water Tips for Taking an Enema

by Kristina Amelong

Use high-quality water. Always remove the chlorine: reverse osmosis, carbon filtering, and distillation water filtration systems are a few choices.

Learn more about safe and unsafe enema solutions

Use a thermometer so you know that the water temperature is between 96 and 103 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water is too cold, you are more likely cramp. If the water is too hot, you could burn the tissues of the colon.

Add Celtic Sea Salt to your enema water to assist the body to maintain healthy electrolyte levels. Use 1 teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt per quart of water. To assure adequate levels of electrolytes in your body, have a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) done seasonally.

Add essential oils to the your enema water. Using essential oils in your enema water will improve your colon cleansing experience; ample scientific evidence exists that the colon is a more effective delivery system for therapeutic agents than the mouth.

The colon can hold up to 4 quarts of warm water. When filling the colon with water, go slowly - close the enema clamp often. However, if you find your body can only take in 1 quart of water, that is just fine too. The smaller your body is, the less water you will be able to take into your colon.
