Probiotic Enemas

Overview, Best Probiotics for Enemas, and Step-By-Step Instructions

What Is a Probiotic?

Probiotics are living microorganisms — healthy bacteria — that have been shown to provide beneficial health effects to the host by replenishing natural gastrointestinal flora.

Having a healthy level of diverse probiotics in your gut means a healthier gut microbiome, which is important for the overall health of your body, the strength of your immune system, and the functioning of your digestive system.

According to research published in 2013, probiotics also help to improve cholesterol levels and treat numerous diseases such as Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, and IBS.

Probiotics are generally consumed orally as supplements, but recently more and more people are becoming interested in introducing probiotics directly into the colon via implants (retention enemas) or suppositories.

Two Basic Strains: Lactobacillus versus Bifidobacterium

There are two main strains of probiotics: bifidobacterium and lactobacillus. Some probiotic supplements are primarily one strain or the other, while others combine multiple strains.

Lactobacillus is one of the more common strains because it is more viable in gastric conditions than bifidobacterium due to its greater resistance to gastric acid. Up to 60% of probiotic bacteria can be killed by your stomach acid prior to reaching your intestine, which is one reason many people choose to use probiotic enemas.

There have been many scientific studies done on these two probiotic strains, and it is widely acknowledged that both strains have the ability to prevent and treat various health issues.

However, studies have also shown that some strains may be better for treating different health issues than others. For example, while Lactobacilli have been found to be effective for treating antibiotic-associated issues like diarrhea, bifidobacteria may be better for treating conditions like IBS and chronic constipation, and some reviews have found that it is the more effective of the two overall.

Most research just finds that probiotics overall are beneficial for health; more research is needed to fully understand the difference between the strains.

Are Probiotic Implants (Retention Enemas) Better Than Taking Capsules Orally?

In certain cases, delivering probiotics directly to the colon can be more effective than oral ingestion.

While it's true that some probiotics may be killed in digestion, most probiotic manufacturers have created delivery systems that are designed to keep the probiotics alive through the stomach acid and digestive process, until they reach the intestinal tract.

Both methods of taking probiotics are beneficial, but if you have the time and ability to regularly take enemas, if you are suffering from chronic constipation or IBS, or if taking oral probiotics makes you feel sick, a probiotic implant may be a good option for you.

If you don't have much time and/or are not suffering from a gut disease and just want to improve the health of your gut microbiome, eating more probiotic-rich food and taking an oral probiotic is certainly just fine too!

Best Probiotic Strain for Colon Implants

If you would like to try a probiotic implant (retention enema) at home, I have two different probiotic recommendations:
  • Bifidonate — Containing Bifidobacterium bifidum Malyoth (2 billion CFU per ½ teaspoon), this probiotic produces B vitamins necessary for the digestive process, assists in the absorption of vitamins and minerals, inhibits harmful bacteria, supports healthy liver function, and helps to promote regularity. I recommend this over other strains such as lactobacillus because of research indicating that bifidobacteria are more beneficial for your health than lactobacilli. Additionally, lactobacillus' ability to survive stomach acid is not necessary if you are taking a probiotic via colon implant.

  • Ortho Biotic — I recommend Ortho Biotic for both colon implants and oral ingestion. It does not need to be refrigerated and contains seven different probiotic strains which combine to support microflora balance, bowel regularity, and optimal immune function.

Suppositories and Probiotics

If you'd prefer that your probiotic is directly received by the colon, another option for administration is adding probiotics to suppositories. To do this, add the contents of 1 probiotic capsule, or ½ teaspoon of Bifidonate, to coconut oil, mix together, and freeze to make a suppository.

Certain essential oils provide health benefits for your colon and microbiome similar to probiotics. Optimal Health Network's Anti-Inflammatory and Flora Booster Essential Oil Blend and Colon Cleanse Essential Oil Blend are designed to support the healthy bacteria in your microbiome, reduce inflammation, strengthen the immune system, and act as a prebiotic.

Similar to taking probiotics, using targeted essential oils in suppositories or as part of a home enema regimen can help you to overcome many health challenges such as Candida overgrowth, ulcerative colitis, and IBS.

A Side Note: Probiotics in Food

While probiotic supplements are a great way to improve your gut health, eating healthy foods that contain probiotics is also beneficial for your overall health. Such foods include kombucha, sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, miso, and high-quality yogurt with live cultures.

How To Do a Probiotic Implant (Retention Enema)

  1. Take two cleansing enemas before taking a probiotic implant. It's best to do the first two enemas outlined in my recommended home enema series:
    • First Enema: Use Frankincense and Myrrh Goat Milk Soap. Soak the bar of soap in filtered water for 20-60 seconds to make a milky solution. Add to 1-4 quarts of filtered water and slowly take in this enema. Once fully taken in, you can release the enema on the toilet. There is no need to hold.
    • Second Enema: Use Colon Cleanse Essential Oil Blend mixed with Celtic Sea Salt. In a small bowl, add about 1 teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt per quart of water. Mix 3-5 drops of the oil blend per quart of water into the salt. Add the salt and oil mixture to your enema bag and water once mixed.
  2. After doing the first two enemas, empty 2-4 probiotic capsules of your choice. I recommend using Ortho Biotic. If you're using Ortho Biotic Powder, we recommend 2 scoops. If you're using Bifidonate, add 1 teaspoon of this probiotic to ½ to 2 cups of filtered water or aloe vera juice. Mix with water or aloe vera juice until fully dissolved. Add this solution to your enema bag, bucket, or implant syringe.
  3. Take the colon implant into your body slowly, as you would an enema. By allowing 5-10 minutes to take in the entire volume of the implant, and by using a colon tube to deliver the solution deeper into the colon, your body will have an easier time holding the implant.
  4. Retain the solution for as long as you are easily able to/have time to (ideally at least 15 minutes). If you aren’t able to hold the enema for the full 15 minutes, that's OK. Listen to your body and empty if you need to.
  5. Empty the solution on the toilet.

▶︎ How To Take an Enema at Home

You can do a probiotic implant as frequently as you’d like, as long as you find that it's making you feel better and not worse. Listen to your body throughout the process, and remember to hydrate well before, during, and after enemas!

SUMMARY

Having a good amount of diverse strains of probiotics in your gut microbiome strengthens your immune system, helps prevent disease, and is important for your overall health. There are several good options for delivering more probiotics to your gut: taking a daily probiotic orally, eating more probiotic-rich foods, and taking regular probiotic implants and/or suppositories. All of these options can be beneficial. It's important to choose the option(s) that work best for you, and make your body feel its best!

Best Colon Cleanse

ONE CLIENT'S EXPERIENCE WITH THE ENEMA SERIES

"I truly wish that everyone could experience the complete feeling of the enema series you prescribe. They wouldn't believe it!" — READ MORE

The best colon cleanse clears out the entire colon, supports the liver in its efforts to detoxify the body, encourages tissue repair, neutralizes toxins, feeds the healthy flora in the colon, and kills Candida and other parasitic organisms.

An enema series can meet all these goals when you are able to clear out the entire colon using three enemas in a row, which are outlined below.

WHAT IS THE ENEMA SERIES?

FIRST ENEMA:

Use 1-4 quarts of filtered water and a made-for-enema soap. To mix the soap and water, soak the bar of soap in high-quality water for 20-60 seconds to make a milky solution. While taking the enema solution in, massage the abdomen to receive the water with less cramping.

Our made-for enema goat milk soaps contain butyric acid, which is the main food source of the cells in the lining of the colon, supporting them to function properly and to maintain the integrity of the intestinal lining.

Butyric acid enemas can help to prevent or reverse colon inflammation associated with IBS, Crohn's disease, prostatitis, ulcerative colitis, and even chronic constipation.

Programmed cell death, or apoptosis, is a normal process in cells. For example, cells can undergo a process of self-destruction if their DNA is damaged so severely that they can't be repaired, or if there are too many cells in an area. Cancer cells, however, do not undergo apoptosis, and continue to multiply. In experiments with lab animals, butyric acid has been found to inhibit multiplication of cancerous cells in the colon and to stimulate apoptosis in these cells.

Our butyrate-rich Frankincense and Myrrh Goat Milk Enema Soap stimulates the colon without irritating it, optimizes healthy hormone levels, can help to shut down cancer cells without harming healthy cells, and boosts immunity.

Also butyrate-rich, our Chamomile and Sage Goat Milk Enema Soap promotes relaxation, regenerates nerves, detoxifies the blood and liver, optimizes healthy hormone levels, is antifungal, and stimulates the gallbladder.

If you take frequent enemas, rotate your made-for-enema soaps. Also, rotate the soap you use to bathe. Rotation of the soaps offers broader support of the body and helps you to avoid developing a sensitivity or allergy.

How to Use Enema Soap

SECOND ENEMA:

Use OHN Colon Cleanse Essential Oil Blend mixed with a high-quality Celtic Sea Salt in the second enema in the series. The oils in OHN Colon Cleanse Essential Oil Blend (citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, melaleuca, lavender, and myrtle) are shown to act together to encourage tissue repair, neutralize toxins, feed the healthy flora in the colon, and kill Candida and other parasitic organisms. These oils can also kill a flu bug before you even know you have it, reduce overall inflammation in the body, and improve metabolism.

The importance of rotation applies here too. If you take daily enemas, choose a few different oils. Beneficial oils and oil blends to use in the colon are:
How to mix the enema solution: Hold the salt in the palm of your hand or put into a small bowl, drop oil into the salt and then add this mixture to your enema water. Use 3-5 drops oil and 1 tsp Celtic Sea Salt to each quart of filtered water.

THIRD ENEMA:

Take a coffee enema as the third enema in the series in order to support the liver and increase your body's antioxidant production.

In short, an enema series is the most optimal way to cleanse the colon. It consists of three enemas, taken one after the other, each with a different solution.

TOXIN BINDERS

Chlorophyll Complex™ binds toxins tightly. Once coffee stimulates your gallbladder to contract and release toxin-laden bile into the small intestine, you want something where the bile duct enters the intestine to bind the toxins so tightly they will not be reabsorbed through the intestinal wall. Take a handful (about 5 to 10 perles) of Standard Process's Chlorophyll Complex, timed to precede the start of the enema by about 30 minutes. To order Chlorophyll Complex, contact the Optimal Health Network.

Oral Colon Cleansing vs. Enemas for Safe Colon Cleansing

Effective and regular colon cleansing works wonders in the body. It can improve detoxification processes; encourage optimal levels of healthy bacteria such as bifidus; discourage the growth of unhealthy bacteria such as c. dificile and yeast; support the liver to filter viruses, bacteria, and other poisons; increase bile production, which aids in both detoxification and digestion; assist the body to heal from cancer; and more. In other words, using the colon cleanse effectively and regularly "lightens the load" for the entire body.

How to cleanse the colon is a controversial subject even though colon cleansing is an excellent overall support for the body. Historically, the enema was the favored method to cleanse the colon. A client, who has worked as a nurse for years, recently recounted her stories of giving enemas in hospitals:

"The doctors called the enema 'the 3H.' I was told to give patients 'the 3H' all day, every day - high, hot, and heck of a lot!"

Now, even in hospitals, most people address this question of how to colon cleanse by using colon cleanse products such as DrNatura's Colonix or Walgreen's Super Colon Detox Laxative Capsules.

Unfortunately, many people have intolerances, or hypersensivity issues, with various compounds found in colon cleanse products that put a strain on one or more of the body's organs and systems. For instance, many colon cleanse products contain licorice. Licorice raises blood pressure. People with high blood pressure should not take licorice. Another colon cleanse product, senna, contains chemicals called sennosides, which irritate the lining of the bowel and for some lead to irritable bowel and leaky gut.

The enema, or in-home colon cleanse, does not lead to these same complications. Nobody is intolerant to water. Unlike many colon cleanse products, the enema:
  • does not harm the nervous system
  • does not discolor the colon or cause Melanosis coli
  • does not weaken the colonic musculature
  • does not cause dependency
  • is usually less expensive
  • works immediately
  • acts therapeutically on the liver, gallbladder, and entire circulatory and detoxification systems
  • is historically proven
  • is scientifically proven to be the most effective method of delivering therapeutics such as frankincense into the body
  • helps the body shed a cold or the flu more quickly

More on Enema How-To

1. Give yourself space (physically and psychologically) to treat yourself to an enema.

Taking an enema is a time for healing. Do what you have to do to make it yours. I can make some
suggestions in this regard, but this is the most individual aspect to the enema as a therapeutic experience. For some it means setting up a comfortable, protected place, turning off the phone, putting on some music or watching a favorite television show. For others, enema time is a time to share a healing experience with someone as you give each other an enema. There is no right way to set up your enema; however I do believe it is very helpful to calm your mind, relax as much as possible and let your mind work with the healing and cleansing powers of your enema.

2. Take your time.

This is extremely important. The slower you gently add the water to your colon the better. By doing so, you enhance your ability to deliver water farther into the colon - ideally all the way to the cecum. (Remember, the cecum is an area with a very high concentration of bacteria.) If you don’t go slowly enough you will quickly stimulate the rectum and sigmoid colon, which are triggered to evacuate with increased pressure. This tendency is common and its occurrence should not discourage you. In order to avoid this, I highly recommend that you allow only ½ cup to 1 cup of water into your colon per ½ minute to one minute. If your sigmoid/rectal area is stimulated easily, there is nothing wrong with going to the toilet and then starting over again. In fact, each time you add water you will be adding it to an emptier colon and you will be able to get water farther into the colon. Our Smooth Flow Higginson Syringe and Hose Cleansing System really helps with taking in the enema water slowly.

3. Be pleased with yourself.

Deciding to take charge of your colon health is no small thing. Though it doesn't have to be hard to give oneself an enema on a regular basis, or as needed, it can be a bit more challenging to conventional thinking, lifestyles and feelings. You can be proud of this commitment to your health. You are using a non-invasive, non-addictive, economical and effective self-help tool for internal cleansing and healing. Whatever your results, be pleased and know that they will improve with your experience and health.

What does your successful enema experience involve?

Enema Ads in 1920

by Kristina Amelong

It is December 18th, 1920. Imagine sitting in a well-worn armchair next to a wood-burning stove, snow just beginning to fall outside the window. On your lap is a Saturday Evening Post, America’s most influential and beloved magazine. You spent a nickel to secure your copy.

First, you admire the fine artwork by Ruth Eastman - a woman donning a red hat made of feathers, looking down at her watch, ice skates tucked under her left arm. Yes, the Norman Rockwell illustration of the boy pushing the baby carriage while being teased by two other boys in red and white baseball caps was your favorite, but the reds in her hat and on her cheeks and the grace of her fingers and gaze were admirable.

Instead of lifting the cover to view the table of contents, your thumb slips into the center pages of the magazine, igniting your imagination with the potential for a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. You had loved Bernice Bobs Her Hair in the May issue of the magazine. After all, it was about a girl from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who sneaks into her cousin Marjorie’s room and cuts off her pigtails, throwing them onto the porch of a boy. You were also hoping for an article on prohibition, a new serial, or more pictures of the Essex automobile, an affordably priced enclosed passenger car you were hoping to soon own.

When you open the magazine, however, you find more of the color red: a full-sized ad from the Faultless Rubber Company. You recognize the familiar fountain syringe because you have seen it in your neighbor’s bathrooms, but you have never "cleaned" your body. Yet, you have been feeling a bit run down lately, so you read the ad:

"Because keeping the body clean inside will prevent much of the sickness in every home..."

"Protects the health of all the family from Baby to Baby’s grandparents..."

"Known from one end of the country to the other for the splendid satisfaction it gives its users..."

You make a note to pick one up at the druggist the next time you are in town. You
turn the page, eagerly beginning Lizard by Rita Weiman.

Water Tips for Taking an Enema

by Kristina Amelong

Use high-quality water. Always remove the chlorine: reverse osmosis, carbon filtering, and distillation water filtration systems are a few choices.

Learn more about safe and unsafe enema solutions

Use a thermometer so you know that the water temperature is between 96 and 103 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water is too cold, you are more likely cramp. If the water is too hot, you could burn the tissues of the colon.

Add Celtic Sea Salt to your enema water to assist the body to maintain healthy electrolyte levels. Use 1 teaspoon of Celtic Sea Salt per quart of water. To assure adequate levels of electrolytes in your body, have a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) done seasonally.

Add essential oils to the your enema water. Using essential oils in your enema water will improve your colon cleansing experience; ample scientific evidence exists that the colon is a more effective delivery system for therapeutic agents than the mouth.

The colon can hold up to 4 quarts of warm water. When filling the colon with water, go slowly - close the enema clamp often. However, if you find your body can only take in 1 quart of water, that is just fine too. The smaller your body is, the less water you will be able to take into your colon.

Cats, Dogs, and Enemas

by Kristina Amelong

Recently, while answering the phone at work, I discovered that some of our happiest customers are veterinarians.

The phone rang. I answered it. "Hello, Optimal Health Center,” I chimed.

“Could you please help me place an order for some of your enema equipment?” the caller asked.

“Sure!” Upon finding her customer number, I noticed she had ordered from us multiple times and that her orders always consisted of 10 to 20 infant bulb syringes, 5 to 10 two-and-a-half quart clear enema bag kits, and 5 to 10 flex tip enema nozzles junior.

“Hmmm, thanks for your past orders. What can I help you to order today?” I offered.

“I would like 10 infant bulb syringes, 10 two-and-a-half quart clear enema bags, and 10 small enema nozzles,” she told me.

“Do you own an alternative health clinic?” I asked.

“No,” she said, laughing. “I am a veterinarian. We use this enema equipment with some of the cats and dogs that come to the clinic, especially the cats.”

“Wow, cats and dogs get enemas at veterinary clinics?” I asked in surprise. I thought I was up on the many regular uses of enemas, but I was abruptly realizing that there was a whole area of enema use that I wasn’t familiar with.

“Yes, pets become constipated for many reasons and respond well to enemas. As I said before, especially cats. We give enemas daily to pets here.” Her matter-of-fact tone on the issue of giving pets enemas and my inner awe made me laugh out loud.

“Well, I will have to let others know that cats and dogs sometimes need enemas too.”

It turns out that a handful of veterinary clinics order enema equipment from OptimalHealthNetwork.com.

Poisoned Into Deep Peace

by Kristina Amelong

I am in Mexico for nine days, giving myself more space to write and my daughter more space to learn Spanish. It is going well.

Yesterday, after my daughter’s Spanish lesson, I shared with her tutor, Genio, the work that I do as an author, health consultant, and colon cleanse guru. His shining black eyes lit up, even brighter than usual.

“My friend, who I sit with in the sauna one time each week at the Jardin de Botanica, suggested that I use the enema, about one each week, to bring myself to excellent health. He told me just last week. He tells me that he uses the enema, one a week, along with his sauna. He is very healthy, 65, the most energy-filled man I know," Genio said enthusiastically.

“That sounds like a great idea,” I said.

“Yes, I have not been feeling my best. Three years ago, a black widow spider bit me. I had worked a 16-hour day, doing political work. When I arrived home, I was very tired that I lie in my bed, on top of my covers, without taking any of my clothes off. In the night, I felt a pain in my leg, around my ankle. I thought that my clothes were bothering me, so I took them off and got under the covers. When I next awoke, it was very bright out. I was supposed to be back to work early at 7:30. I was worried that I was late. It seemed like the sun was too high in the sky. As I arose, I lifted the covers and looked down to my leg. I lie back down, thinking that I must be having a nightmare, as my leg around my ankle was the size of a melon. I then had a deep peace come over me. Yes, I was in a nightmare. I went back to sleep. I woke up two more times, looking at my leg, seeing the sun high in the sky, feeling a deep peace, knowing I was in a nightmare, going back to sleep. I was not worried,” he recounted.

“Wow. How long did this go on?” I asked.

“Three days. Finally my friend began to worry about my absence from work. He called me and he called me. He came to my house, but I did not answer. I heard none of this activity. He called my family in another town: they had not heard from me. He looked in the jails because at that time it wasn’t unusual for political activists to be put in jail for a day or two. He called my friends. Nothing. Finally, he and his friend broke into my apartment and found me lying asleep in my bed.”

I was all ears, bathing in the splendor of Genio's story.

“They took me to the hospital. The doctor told me that I was a very lucky man to still be alive. That I had not moved had kept the poison mostly in my leg. However, now I have problems with my stomach that I didn’t have before the spider bit me: each time I drink milk or eat cheese, I have an upset stomach. My friend told me that if I use the enema one time each week, I will return to excellent health.” Genio looked at me hopefully.

“That is an excellent idea,” I offered, considering that over time, we could also explore auto-immunity and his other options to improve his health.
